To be honest, I never really paid much attention to his laugh until you posted links to pictures of it in the Smithy review.
I know that Roach's crew tested the films on test audiences, so I suspect they liked it or Stan wouldn't have kept it in, much like he kept the "cry" once he teamed up with Ollie even though he didn't personally like it. Perhaps not everything that was popular a century ago is as endearing today.
That being said, I just watched his earlier "Pick and Shovel" and because you had pointed it out, I started noticing it! He does it twice while flirting with Katherine Grant. Now I'm probably going to notice it in every film! lol
