I seem to recall a publicity item mentioning that the baby was Mickey Daniels' nephew, but I'll have to go back and check on that.

A couple of corrections -

Johnny Aber's link in the Updates section takes us to the page for "Tire Trouble."

Johnny is also one of the kids listed in the 'unidentified actors' section of "Spook-Spoofing." More specifically, he's the dark haired kid in the middle with the bucked teeth.

After "Our Gang", in 1934, she was singing, dancing, and playing accordion in a vaudeville/night club act with her sister Eudora as "The Britten Sisters". By 1936, she was doing a solo act which included acrobatic dancing. She was billed as a "former Our Gang Star". In 1938, she was back in school in Seattle and eventually enlisted in the US Navy for World War II service.
Note: Her Family Tree at Ancestry.com has her birth year as 1924 and her middle name as "June" which is also on her first marriage certificate.

The "Swiss Miss" page is outstanding even at just 75% complete. We all know that it is one of Lordheath's favorites (LOL).

The US "Antiques Roadshow" has the mountain horn at about the 31 minutes mark.

The "gruels Gott" cited in the review should read "gruess" in English or "ue": "ü" with an umlaut. What looks like "ls" is probably the German and old English "ß" which is a modern "ss":"Grüß Gott". One may notice how Lordheath anticipates these questions and cleverly placed a Wikipedia link accessed by clicking on the word "greeting" in the text.

Years ago, when I was stationed at a German (Erding) Air Base in Bavaria, the locals used the expression for both "hello" and "goodbye" much as the Hawaiians use "aloha".

Typos:

He was born to Paul Auguste' Ferrandou and Louise S. Piton
who owned a dressmaking shop in New Orleans. By 1909, he was performing professionally as Walter Ferrandou, a baritone singer, to poor reviews. In 1910, he was listed in the City Directory as "actor" but receiving critical praise. In 1911, he was one of the lead performers (as Don Ferrandou) in Lew Dockstader's Minstrels performing to sell-out crowds throughout the South, East, and Southwest for over 2 years and then went solo. In 1913, a theater owner, who had booked him, said he was "one of the highest priced performers on the vaudeville stage".
In 1914, when working for the Lubin Studio in Jacksonville FL, he married (twice or thrice divorced) Mrs. Katherine Gotthold Varty Grayson Millis (c.1885-1930). Kate was born in Jacksonville but had "roots" in NYC and they moved there where he performed for a few years as the principal performer at the exclusive Ritz Restaurant.

In 1919 he signed as a replacement principal performer with the huge, elaborate hit show, "Chu Chi Chow". For 3 years he toured the Eastern US and Canada. Before 1924, he and Kate settled into an expensive home in Jacksonville, FL where he was listed as "actor" in the City Directory. For reasons unknown (to me), in the 1925 Directory, he is listed as VP and secretary of a company and as a successful insurance salesman and agent thereafter until 1940. Tragically, his wife, Kate, died of a stroke in Feb.1930 (about) age 41.

In 1944, Don is working at a radio station in Jacksonville as a "news commentator" and works his way up to editor and news director at other radio stations. By 1947, he is married and divorced and working in radio in Albany, GA at station WALB. He moved over to their TV station (WALB-TV) as news director and was working there as late as 1956.
He died in Albany in 1961 and is buried there.

His obit in "Variety" says he was working as a "contact man" for RKO Theaters at the Capitol Bldg.("NJ State House") in Trenton, NJ when he died of a heart attack.

The following was brought to my attention:

I just learned on one of the L&H facebook groups that the restored/reconstructed Battle of the Century is scheduled to air on the German and French cable channel Arte on January 2. While we would definitely prefer a home video release, at least the film is being shown on European TV. Hopefully some kind soul will record it and post it on youtube for the rest of the world to see. I thought you would be interested in this news.

Comparing this to MAGAZINE COOKING, I do believe the Stan-lookalike tormentor at the right of the first unID screenshot is Bert Bucher as "Bill Green."

Going by the trade magazine page linked below, Don Ferrando as "Tom Brown" would be the other tormentor, and I assume Roy Byron as "Sport Regan" is the tough man at far right of the unIDs (he was 5'11" and stout, per his draft cards).

Am positive Cop 2 is Budd Fine. Also, I think I may have pointed this out before, but I'm pretty sure Budd is the gallery spectator who socks Charley in NOW I'LL TELL ONE.

Also, there is a second uniformed cop who is behind and thus obscured by Budd(?) in the shot you have for the unIDs - trying to pause and catch him on YouTube, could this be Chester Bachman?

Lastly, while Ed Brandenburg's long-repeated listing for CRAZY HOUSE was most definitely the result of him, as per usual, being mistaken for brother Chet... do you think that Ed might actually be there after all, but as the OTHER, currently unID'd worker with the hat who does the talking?

I was born September 19, 1927, at the Loamshire Hospital in Santa Monica, California. My mother, Irene McCauley, had just reached the "ripe old age" of 17 on July 10th of that year. She had met my father the year before while waiting for a bus, with her friend Grace, at the corner of Geary and Market Street.

On our way home, Daddy told me the man I sang for was Gus Meins, the Director of the Our Gang Comedies, and he wanted me back at the Studio on Monday for a voice test. As a result of this test, I was put under contract to Hal Roach Studios from 1934 to 1936 and cast to sing "I Wanna Go Back To My Little Grass Shack" in the next OUR GANG movie called "Mike Fright."

A few month's later, the studio wanted me to play in their new full-length feature film called "Babes In Toyland" with Hal Roach Studios two biggest stars, LAUREL & HARDY. I was cast as one of the children of Mother Peep, "the old lady who lived in a shoe." This wonderful movie has become a Classic over the years!

After "Babes in Toyland" I worked at RKO in the movies, "Kid Carnival" and "Freckles" and then returned to Hal Roach to appear in "Our Gang Follies of 1936". In this Our Gang movie, I sang "The Object of My Affection" with Alfalfa.

Birth and death dates correct.

Born: Voghera, Pavia, Lombardy, Italy .

Height: 5'8”.....Passport 1922.
5'9”.....WWII Draft Card 1942.
5'10”...”Blue Book of the Screen” 1923.

Birth name: Luigi Montagna. Legally changed to Louis Montana with 1921 citizenship.

Luigi immigrated to the USA from Italy in 1906. He did professional wrestling on the side while he worked in a quarry. The wrestling became more lucrative and he started doing it full-time. Supposedly, Douglas Fairbanks saw him working out in a gym and invited him to come to Hollywood to act in films. (His 1917 Draft Card backs this up.)
He did well in films and moved up in the ranks of professional wrestlers.

About 1924, he “married” a professional dancer from Georgia who went by the name “Jackie LaVerne”. He never admitted they were married but she said they were. (Have not found a marriage record and 1910 and 1920 and 1923 Blue Book list him as “single” and 1931 Marriage Certificate to another woman says that it is his 1st marriage.) They made the newspapers in 1928 when Bull had her arrested for “assault with a slipper”. They were arguing in his car on the way back from dinner and she struck him in the head with her “French heel” slipper. It evidently was not a stunt as she went to jail and 2 days later, Bull paid her $100 bail and asked the judge to quash the guilty verdict and jail sentence. The judge complied and sentenced her to 2 years probation. Bull said she would never enter his home again.

In 1929, Bull met, courted and married (21 September) a 23 year-old widow, Mary Mathews Poulson. Supposedly, she was a businesswoman/secretary and former actress. They made the newspapers in 1931 when she sued for divorce.

From the "LA Times" 22 Aug 1931 p.16:
"...... He frowns, scowls, grimaces, glares, glowers and squints. Sometimes he smiled, said Mrs. Montana, but that was nearly as bad.
In addition, the plaintiff testified, Bull would occasionally get drunk and when intoxicated his face was just simply nothing a witness could discuss in open court, she said.
And once, after making the most terrible faces, said the witness, Mr. Montana began growling at me. It sounded so fearful that I had a nervous breakdown. And then he wouldn't let my mother come and see me when I was ill.
Mrs. Rosalie Mathews corroborated her daughter's testimony as to that."

Her divorce was granted 21 August 1931.

I don't have my DVD at the moment, so I can't check to make sure, but I dispute the IDs of Estelle Etterre (face doesn't look right to me) and Sydney Jarvis (the eyebrows don't look thick enough).

Also, I think I see Gertrude Sutton (3rd from left) and Kay Deslys (2nd from right) among the chorus girls.

Also, I believe you had someone the the unIDs potentially ID'd as Carl Leviness, but he does not appear to be in the group anymore. I would have agreed on that.

Brown-haired, grey/blue-eyed American actress. She lived in Kansas City, San Diego and Los Angeles. Educated at Imperial Valley High School, all bios say "graduated four years ago," showing a lack of updates. As per the October 13, 1928 edition of Motion Picture News, she was signed to Universal, to make her first appearance in The Collegians (likely the 1926-29 series of shorts with George Lewis, Dorothy Gulliver and Eddie Phillips)

Wondering if her name was a stage name, as I haven't had much luck with FamilySearch records, let alone if she even remained in California after her star burned out.

[Side note: Since George J. Lewis is now on the site, he could use a link to his page in the first paragraph. But anyway...]


The above was all I and others could find (January 2015) until over three years later (late July 2018), when I remembered Peggy (thanks to the Chase set, no doubt) and did a Newspapers.com search, whereupon I uncovered two newspaper articles which helped put this one to bed:

Los Angeles Times, 7 Sep 1928: ". . . 21 years of age [really 25 years] . . . was given a contract by Carl Laemmle, president of Universal Pictures. . . . Miss Howard is a native of Paola, Kan., and resides here at 817 South Hobart Boulevard. She crashed the extra line two months ago."

Los Angeles Times, 13 Dec 1929: Actress Florence "Peggy" Howard is getting a divorce from Floyd Roy Howard; Mr. Howard himself "obtained an interlocutory divorce a year ago on grounds of desertion, when Mrs. Howard did not appear in court to contest the suit. He did not show a disposition to have the final decree entered, however, and Mrs. Howard attended to that matter herself. So her friends in Hollywood are asking each other if she does not have further matrimonial prospects in mind."

The 1929 divorce article in particular gave me two important leads: "Peggy's" real first name was Florence, and "Howard" was her married name. I took to Ancestry to look up anyone named Florence, born 14 July (the date we have for her from the Blue Book/Almanac bios) in the 1900s in Paola, Kansas, USA. A match was found in the Social Security Applications and Claims Index at Ancestry for a Florence S. Roberts, born 14 July 1903 in Paola, Kansas to Jesse R. Turley and Lola L. Blanchard, died 06 March 1999; the "notes" revealed her middle initial of "S" stood for Samantha. A further Find a Grave match revealed she was interred at Placerville Union Cemetery in Placerville, California, USA.

Eventually, I was able to determine Florence married a Philip Vincent "Phil" Roberts (b. Nevada, 1902-1974) sometime during the 1930s and had a son, James Philip Roberts, in 1941 in Fresno County, California, USA. In continuing my search, I found two records which are important as they give Florence's name as "Peggy," all but completely linking the two.

In the 1940 Census (taken 29 April 1940), the Robertses, Phil V. (age 36, b. Nevada) and Peggy (age 36, b. Kansas) are living at 936 Simpson Ave., Fresno, California, USA. Phil lived in the "same place" in 1935, while Peggy lived in Los Angeles at that time. Phil is an accountant for "wholesale oil & gas," while Peggy is a photography retoucher.

Next was Phil's obituary in the Reno Gazette-Journal, 14 Sep 1974: "Phil V. Roberts, 72, of Pollock Pines, Calif., died Thursday in a Placerville, Calif. hospital. He was born in Winnemucca [Nevada], May 14, 1902, and attended schools there. Roberts worked for the Winnemucca Post Office and the City of Winnemucca. He also worked for Shell Oil Co. in Fresno, Calif. Surviving are his widow, Peggy, of Pollock Pines; sister, Rose Arant of Reno, two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews."

Given that the birth date and birth place match the ones given in her Blue Book/Almanac bios, that the 1929 L.A. Times article gives her name as "Florence," and finally, that the 1940 Census and husband's obituary call her "Peggy," I am convinced that "Peggy Howard" and Florence Samantha (Turley) Roberts are one in the same...

*No direct evidence of Harold working for RKO Studio nor photos or obituary found. He is the ONLY Adkins, Atkins, Hal, Harold or H.M. in the given time-frame found living in Los Angeles or working at a movie studio and having mechanical experience. Harold M., Harold, and Hal ADKINS and ATKINS are the same person.

1916-1921 Harold's Mom and Dad are in a scandalous divorce trial (in the LA newspapers for 5 years).

About 1913, Harold's Mom, Laura, started cheating on her husband with a wealthy man from Iowa who was to eventually inherit a $2,000,000 estate (with his sister) provided he is of good moral character when his 94 year old father in IA dies.
Being a lawyer, Harold's Dad decides to sue the other man for $50,000 for alienation of his wife's affection. The jury trial goes on and lurid and titillating evidence about the “lovers” is presented. The Dad even breaks down sobbing during his testimony and wins the suit but the judgment is cut down to $5,000. (That's all his wife's affections were worth, according to one newspaper report).
The defense denied everything and claimed that the allegations were part of a conspiracy to keep the “other man” from his $1,000,000 inheritance by smearing his character.
The case carried on with appeals until 1921, when they settled out of court, dismissing the “other man” without any guilt.
Do not know what happened to the “other man”, Albert H. Brett, but the Adkins's got divorced. Some time in the 1920's, they reconciled because the records show them living together (with Harold) until the 1940 Census which has them “divorced” and living apart.

Real name: Victor Wing Wong.
Born: San Francisco, CA.

Victor Wong was an American actor of Chinese descent. He played the Chinese cook in "King Kong" and "Son of Kong".
His Dad, Toy Sin Wong and Mom (?) were both born in China according to the 1920 LA Census. The Dad had immigrated in 1882 and was a "laborer for a moving picture studio".
His "Young Men's" (Ancestry.com) WWII Draft Card from 1942 says he was 5'7 1/2" and born in San Francisco, but when he enlisted in the US Army in 1943, his height is given as "66 inches" (5'6"). He played in American "propaganda" movies during the war. His wife, Rose, was born in CA and 10 years his junior in the 1940 Census.

In 1934 Baker was elected treasurer (not secretary/treasurer) of the new Junior Screen Actors' Guild (not the Screen Actors' Guild). The Junior SAG, composed of extras or "bit" players, was a subsidiary of the SAG. Source: "Los Angeles Times": (A) 26 Jan 1934, part II, page 9; (B) 11 Apr 1938, part I, page 2.

Lewis De Vore isn't a real person. This was a mistake in the Maltin/Bann book. It's actually Andy Samuel's character name in "No Noise."

The McGowan sisters are the two girls in this photo that have been mistakenly identified as Jean Johnston and Geraldine Condon. I believe the "Whiskers Lady" is Jerry McGowan and the "Snake Charmer" is Roberta. They were series director Bob McGowan's daughters.
