I have been trying to avoid researching bios of actors who appear in only one or a few Roach productions. Her birthplace of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa caught my attention as it almost cost me my very existence and she is the only person in IMDb from Mt. Pleasant, IA.
In 1876, a nice young, smart, articulate guy in OH (Stephen D. Richards 1856-1879) who had gotten involved with some crooks and counterfeiters after his Mom died, migrated to Iowa. He worked for a few months on my gr.grandfather's farm with my grandfather and other casual labor who were hired for planting and harvesting on his large farm in Morning Sun, IA. Richards left and went to work at the Iowa Lunatic Asylum in nearby Mt. Pleasant burying deceased patients. He said he got used to working with "stiffs" in that job for about a year. He got the "wanderlust" and started traveling on horseback. His first companion, a stranger, accused him of cheating at a card game while camped at night. Richards shot him between the eyes with a pistol and later shot another stranger in the back of the head who called him a "liar" after a card game while camping overnight. Lucky for me that my grandfather, who was about his age, didn't gamble.
Later on, Richards used an ax to murder a woman he was "shacking" with and her 2 daughters age 8 and 10. He murdered her 2 year old son by grabbing him by the feet and slamming him against the floor until dead. He murdered a total of 9 people before he was caught (age 23), tried, convicted, and publicly hanged in Nebraska in April of 1879.

Real name: Daisy M. Armstrong.
Maidena was born near Mt. Pleasant, IA, probably at Oakland Mills where her prosperous grandparents had a large farm and grain mill on the Skunk River. With her parents, Marcellus Armstrong (1846-1922) and Lou(isa) Short (1847-1938), prosperous farmers, she moved to Albany, OR between 1895 and 1900. Maidena was an "only child".
"Maidie Armstrong" was a telephone operator in 1905 in Albany, OR and by 1910 (Census) she was living in Corvallis, OR with her parents as "Maidre Coupisch", divorced. Even using many spelling variations, I haven't found any information on the husband.
By 1920, she was living on her own as a "millinery trimmer" in Portland, OR (divorced).
Her Dad died in OR in 1922 and sometime later she moved to Los Angeles and was acting with the prestigious Pasadena Playhouse Players by 1927 to good reviews in small parts. Living with her Mom in LA in their fully paid for $10,000 home in 1930 (Census), her profession was a "chamber" maid? in a hotel (divorced, age 48).
On 25 November 1935 at her home in the Sawtelle Neighborhood of LA, she "ran hose from gas jet to mouth" and died of "asphyxiation". I think her incorrect birth information comes from her Death Certificate. The informant was a woman (I don't know who) at the same address, not Maidena's mom who died 3 years later at the age of 91.
