Big Blanche -- Place of death should really be Granada Hills (per the DC), not Hollywood. COD: "artiosclerotic" --> "arteriosclerotic." Acknowledgments: "(1930 Census)" should be "(1900 Census)" (might have been an error on my part).

Billy Bletcher -- birth date should be the 20th, not 24th

Baldwin Cooke -- character for CALL A COP misspelled "Detcetive"

Virginia Grey -- "Paul Parrott" mislink (extra "1" where the underscore should be)

Ollie -- NICKEL HOPPER is misspelled with an extra "P" in "HOPPER"

Harry Hayden -- birth place should be NOVA Scotia (not "Novia")

Edgar Norton -- scrollover on header image says "(1933)" - should be "(1935)"

Lincoln Plumer -- "California" needs to be removed from his birth place.

Sage Sisters -- "(a la gher father)"

A-Z Actors -- Frank Lester Ward's surname is misgiven as "Wagner"; Pierre Watkin is alphabetically misplaced between Watsons.

ONE AT A TIME -- Favourite bit: "Moahn" (Mohan)

SAILORS BEWARE -- third-to-last Trivia fact: "embarras[s]ment"

MANHATTAN MONKEY BUSINESS -- third-to-last factoid: "USN (Unites [United] States Navy)"

SWISS MISS -- top of page: "SCreenplay"

TOP FLAT -- odd syntax in the Favourite bit: "...but I have always remembered this short but for one rather hilarious scene." Second "but" reads awkward to me.

Corrections in the description of the film:

"...crashes the pursuing car onto its roof" this wording is confusing. Did the car flip over onto its roof or did it crash into the roof of another car?

"...to the stewards... (steward?) Charlie Hall -- but Hall is not included in the cast list and the photo of the steward shown among the unidentified does not look like Hall.

"refused permisison" -- permission

"keeps in it" -- should be keeps it in

Finlayson begins to -- not "beings to"

While researching obscure silent era actors, I came across a few who have Hal Roach credits:

Lillian Leighton (1874-1956) "Your Husband's Past" (1926)
"Be Your Age" (1926) "Flaming Fathers" (1927) "Fair and Muddy" (1928).

Paul Everton (1868-1948) "Topper Takes A Trip" (1938) "Merrily We Live" (1938)

Richard Neill (1875-1970) "General Spanky" (1936)

Gladys Hulette (1896-1991)[played Alice in "Alice In Wonderland" 1910] "Be Your Age" (1926)

http://www.lordheath.com/menu1_784.html

Born: Greenfield, Highland County, Ohio.
Real name: James Henry Bush*.
*his birth record shows no middle name or initial but a number of newspaper "blurbs" say "James H." or "James Henry" Bush.

The family moved from Ohio to Los Angeles about 1912. His Mom, May Brown (1873-1959), was a "stage Mother" and his manager. One newspaper account says she had been a successful stage actress "back East" and another says she had wanted to become an actress. She enrolled him in the Egan Dramatic School where he received his primary education and performed at churches, social clubs and civic events as "the boy soprano". Newspaper interviews mention him acting as a "kid" in films and one said he was a "protege' of Mary Pickford for productions she did with Paramount" but no films are named. He sang, danced, acted and played violin all the way through his 4 years at Los Angeles High School. He became a prolific stage actor performing everything from fairy tales; musicals; comedy; drama and Shakespeare.

After graduating high school he played assorted parts in a wide variety of plays for various amateur groups for a few years, eventually getting a starring role in 1926 with the esteemed Pasadena Community Theater. He worked steadily for the next several years with the Duffy Players and Morosco, playing a season in St. Louis and one in Seattle/Portland while resisting movie offers. Invariably he received good reviews for his performances even when the play or other actors were below par and developed his own following before he was 22 years old.

In 1932 he signed with Paramount for 2 pictures and from then on, played everything from leading men, supporting roles and bit parts in major and minor motion pictures, working steadily into TV series' in the 1950's.

In his early 20's he raised goldfish commercially. His multi-acre ranch on Laurel Canyon Road was all white: house, barn, furniture, fences, chickens, rabbits, horse and bulldog.

In May 1935, James was a pallbearer for 2 funerals in 2 days. Jackie Coogan's Dad was driving to their ranch on a mountain road outside San Diego at high speed (possibly intoxicated) and ran off the road, rolling over several times into a rocky ditch. All were killed except Jackie who was riding in the rumble seat and miraculously escaped with minor injuries. All were friends of James. One was 19 year old up-and-coming movie actor, Junior Durkin and the other friend was 25 year old Robert J. Horner, an up-and-coming radio writer/actor (not to be confused by the producer of "low-rent" western movies).

Actors A-Z page: some who should be in "red" as they are exclusively in Non-Roach films: Edward G. Robinson, Joe Rock, Irish Meredith, Polly Moran, Mantan Moreland

"The Non-Skid Kid" - Lilymae Wilkinson needs a link.

Eddie Boland -- Click on "Many Happy Returns" brings up "All Mixed Up." Is this an aka title? Also, there is no "All Mixed Up on the Films A-Z page.

Films A-Z should be in red: "West of Hot Dog," "Radio Bugs" and "The Bell Hop."

"Blue Sunday" - Unidentified large woman: Molly Thompson?

Lee Meehan -- "West of Hot Dog" is Non-Roach.

On Madison Lacy's page, I screwed up when I typed out the sentence, "The former is what's given in his birth records, as well as the Social Security Death Index." "Former" should be changed to "latter."

And also, a question regarding the RING UP THE CURTAIN IDs: will you be noting Parrott, Howe and Joslin's dual roles? Seeing as they are currently ID'd for one role each, and Parrott and Howe are also rowdy employees and Joslin also an audience member, and I took your removal of them from the unIDs as agreeing with my IDs of them in those roles.

Row 1: William Peterson?, James Parrott, an unlisted-in-the-HLE Lew Harvey, Wallace Howe, unknown

Row 2, bald guy: Billy Fay

Crowd shot:
- Looks like Margaret Joslin (again) and I think Jerome LaPlanch flanking the middle row.
- Front row, of the three fully visible: Belle Mitchell is rightmost, and that might be James Parrott yet again (role #3?) as the man at the left.

Perhaps owing to their absence from the HLE cast list, the film is completely missing from Margaret Joslin and Harry Clifton's pages.

Date Posted: Tue, April 02 2019, 11:34:18

http://www.lordheath.com/Harry_Lowe_Jr.html

Lordheath originally had the correct screenshot for "Washee Ironee" for the "Chinese boy from laundry shop" but the actor is definitely NOT Harry Lowe Jr. from Imperial County CA.

Since the usual sources name him as the actor, this is an ANM "EXCLUSIVE".

Neither is it his brother, HERBERT LOWE.
His cousin, ALBERT LOWE Jr. (child performer), is still possible if the actor is named LOWE and from Imperial County CA.

Also still possible is another child actor named "WONG" (probably from the LA Area) as per MALTIN and BANN.

Why are HARRY (and HERBERT) LOWE eliminated?
They were in Canton, China from June 1932 until June 1941.
That makes it impossible for either of them to be in "Washee Ironee", filmed in CA in 1934.

From the"Calexico Chronicle" (1932 June 2 p.4), the entire family left CA for Canton, China where the Dad was planning to open a paint and varnish factory. It is difficult to tell from the article if this was to be a permanent relocation, but the youngest daughter, GLADYS LOWE, was born there in 1936.
The newspaper quote below:

"Harry Lowe and Family to Sail Next Wednesday

Harry Lowe, Chinese interpreter at the International line for the past several years, and proprietor of the Paris meat market in Mexicali, is preparing to leave here next Wednesday with his family, returning to Canton, China, where he will go into business. Mr. Lowe will sail from San Pedro on the President Hoover and will take his plans for a paint factory which he expects to open in Canton in an endeavor to distribute paint and lacquer in China in a wholesale business. Mr. Lowe, a brother of Albert Lowe of the Bank of America here, has made many friends both in Mexicali and in Calexico where he has lived in recent years. He has officiated in thousands of cases of Chinese people crosing the international boundary at this port."

The most conclusive evidence is the ship's passenger list returning from Hong Kong on June 16, 1941. The LOWE family is on board minus the Dad who returned either sooner? or later?; he died in San Diego in July 1966.
Look at both pages of the passenger list linked below (free site), especially page 2 column #22. It asks the question: When was your last departure (from the USA)?
The LOWEs' answer is "June 12, 1932."

This family was very, very fortunate as the Japanese had already invaded China in 1937 and slaughtered thousands. Their passenger ship was returning to the USA just 6 months before the Japanese invasion of Pearl Harbor, HI on December 7, 1941! I don't know, but this turmoil may have had something to do with the Dad not returning with the family in 1941.

Merrill's parents, Raymond Strong and Josephine Merrill were married in 1922 in Salt Lake City in the LDS Temple. They lived in Alpine, UT where his Mom was a school teacher. She had 4 children there. In 1933, the Dad died in Salt Lake City from a broken neck in an accidental fall from a second story hotel window with "intoxication" as a contributing factor. The family then moved to San Francisco to live with the Mom's parents.
About 1936, they moved back to Provo, UT where the Mom eventually became a teacher at BYU Provo. Merrill was a star athlete at BY High School, graduating in 1948 and after a year at BYU was drafted into the US Army shortly before he married Gayle Curtis in 1950. After mustering out of the Army, he went to work as a clerk for an insurance company in San Francisco.

From Dorothy Coburn's bio in the 1929 and 1930 Motion Picture News Blue Books:

"Entered pictures in May, 1926. Daily swim in Culver City Community pool led to being sent to Hal Roach Studios to double Helene Chadwick in swimming and diving. Remained a double 7 mos."

I know your copy of the film isn't in the best quality, but if Chadwick is in fact absent from any pool scenes, is it possible Dorothy Coburn is among the Bathing Beauties?
