Subject: Really difficult to try to encourage anyone to compete when no one knows what the scoring percentages are at state. Why would they still have digital sweeps if you can compete at-large? MAO really needs to get some details out to the states and locals so a contestant knows what she is getting into. Cost wise- what is the benefit of doing a local vs at-large?

In reply to: 's message, "Who is still competing this year and will Ohio let contestants do at-large/buy-in since supposedly the new owner is telling the states to do that?" on 21:52:38 02/01/23 Wed

[> [> Subject: I 100% agree that they should know about the scoring BEFORE any more locals, etc. There’s no difference in price to do digital sweeps vs at large unless they have to buy their own crown and sash. Digital sweeps winners still have to pay the MO fees. Local winners don’t pay the MO registration fee (or none that I’ve heard of) and they have an ED that is supposed to help them. Like in everything, some are more helpful than others. There were a few girls who did not win at digital last year so at large gets you to MO for sure.

[> [> [> Subject: Last year’s local title holders paid the 35 registration fee plus 100 to enter the local. Then they paid 350 to compete at state. Almost 500 in… what is the at-large fee?

[> [> [> [> Subject: Local titleholders paid the $350 out of their own pocket? I thought the local paid that fee. Ngl it’s pretty funny that local winners had more out of pocket expenses than virtual sweeps winners. The virtual winners also didn’t have to travel to a local even if it was close, spend all day there, have an evening gown or social impact outfit for prelims or perform their talent live. Seems like they got the better deal. Makes me wonder why anyone would compete in a local unless they give a lot of scholarship money

[> [> [> [> [> Subject: If the digital winners had less expenses then why would they hold them this year? They will make more if they just have any digital contestant register for state as an at-large. As for the locals- the local directors pay a fee in addition to the local title holder paying a fee. Must be the covering of the costs for the week at state, etc…

[> [> [> [> [> [> Subject: Because they are going to be begging for contestants, having only 11 titleholders from locals. It will be easier to sign-up contestants who only have to pay the $35 MA fee rather than the, I'm guessing, $350- $500 for at large, as well as the $350 MA fee all state contestants pay on top of that. So, either a $385 total entry fee competing at virtuals or $735- $885 to go at-large.
