[Giants owner Wellington] Mara, 88, was [Vince] Lombardi's classmate at Fordham and was vice president of the Giants when Lombardi was an offensive assistant from 1954-58.

"He was a border and I was a day hop, so we weren't that close," Mara said of the Fordham days. "We didn't really get friendly until after we both graduated ... He was very excitable, very determined."

Did he see greatness in the young Lombardi? "Yes," Mara said. "He knew exactly what he wanted to do. He was an excellent teacher. He got his point home to the players very well. And he had great confidence in himself and his ability."

It is ironic that the Giants had two of the greatest coaches as assistants (Lombardi & Belichick) and due to bad timing neither ever became their head coach. So the Giants ended up with Allie Sherman & Ray Hanley. The Maras thought they could always get Vince back,, never dreaming he could become so successful so fast. (NT)OldRam.09:46:00 02/08/05 Tue
