Subject: Heard F Mc Laughlin on WFUV last night during halftime of hoop game.. he commented on ftbl team & upgrade of facilities field turf, night lights & scoreboard... He said work has already started..My comment is why hasnt FU asked for alumni input regarding these changes.. I understand can't please everyone but why didnt FU ask for recommendations.. Will new turf have a Ram head insignina at midfield? will endzones be maroon? landscaping near endzones? scoreboard for ftbl only (bring it closer & perpendicular to field)? If all this is scheduled where can alumni view a rendering?

It was good to see Coach Ed Foley and his wife because his presence can only help the program in terms of financial support. Gridiron Pres. Rich Marrin was also there as were sundry other backers of the football program and more important of Fordham!

I had heard that three players have all hurt their knees this past season. Possibly that all three have torn ACLs and will not be back until this upcomings summer's camp and will miss all of spring ball. Supposedly the players are soph. Garritano, and jrs. Johnson and Bottiglieri. Does anyone know any truth behind the rumor?

From Cleveland Plain Dealer

Mike Schumacher was always one of the biggest players on his team while playing CYO football at St. Gregory the Great School.

So it was sort of a shock when the South Euclid resident entered Benedictine as a freshman.

"I was used to going against guys 50-60 pounds lighter than me and [I] relied on my size a lot," said Schumacher, the Bengals' 6-3, 260-pound senior right offensive tackle. "When I got to high school, there were guys just as big as me."

He was the backup at both tackle posi tions until this season, so Schumacher is well- versed in perseverance.

"I have worked in the weight room, worked on my agility, speed, foot work and technique," Schumacher said. "And I waited my turn."

Schumacher also lis tened to the people who were there to help him.

"Because Mike backed up two positions, he got a lot of reps with the varsity and scout teams," said Pat Conochan, Benedictine's offensive line coach.

"He worked hard to become a better player. He's more aggressive and does a good job staying engaged on his blocks."

Schumacher gives a lot of credit to senior two-way lineman and three-year starter Jim McCarthy.

"Those two are always together," Conochan said. "They talk a lot about the game and their responsibilities on the line."

The football field is not the only place Schumacher excels.

He has a 3.8 grade point average. He is president of his class and the computer club, vice president of the Key Club and a member of the National Honor Society.

Fordham and Dayton have shown an interest in Schumacher for football, as have Ohio Northern, Case Western and John Carroll.

Schumacher, who will also look at West Point and Annapolis, plans to major in business.

Chances are he won't be the last Schumacher to wear a Bengals uniform. His 6- year-old brother, Brian, already weighs 85 pounds. Connor, 8, is lanky.

"Connor's built like my dad," said Mike, whose father, Thom Schumacher, was a wide receiver at St. Ignatius.

Benedictine vs. St. Marys Memorial, Saturday, 11 a.m., Canton Fawcett Stadium.

All Aboard for Greatness

[St. Mary's coach Ed "Slip"]Madigan faced a problem similar to the one mentor Knute Rockne faced at Notre Dame when public universities refused to schedule the Fighting Irish. Rockne had taken his team on the road, traveling to Los Angeles to play USC and to New York for an annual game against Army.

Madigan's response to his own predicament was even bolder in 1930. He didn't follow Rockne's example. He trumped it. He wasn't going to New York to play any team, but the Fordham Rams and their famed "Seven Blocks of Granite," which hadn't lost in two years. And this wasn't just a football trip. This was also a sight-seeing tour for fans and alumni.

There was a lot at risk. If his team was defeated soundly by the powerful Rams, St. Mary's budding reputation as a big-time college football team would be greatly diminished.

The 16-car "Slip Madigan's St. Mary's-Fordham Special" included 150 fans, media and enough bathtub gin for it to be dubbed the "World's Longest Bar."

* * * * * * * * * * *

The Fordham trip would become a chief recruiting tool and a way to increase the team's visibility in coming years. High school bands appeared at train stations to serenade the visitors from California. Impromptu parades down Main Street were not uncommon. Players did calisthenics on railroad sidings and scrimmaged local teams along the way.

* * * * * * * * * * *

Fordham had a 16-game unbeaten streak dating back to 1928. The attraction of one of the top teams from the West Coast playing the best team in the East produced a sellout at the Polo Grounds. Public demand was so intense that the Columbia Radio Network decided to broadcast the game nationwide with top announcer Ted Husing drawing the assignment.

James Madison finished the regular season with a higher rank than Lehigh (#8 vs. #16).
James Madison drew more fans per game this season than Lehigh (12,790/game vs. 9,598/game).
Yet, James Madison is playing its first-round playoff at Lehigh today.
My guess is the Mountain Hawks/Engineers were awarded the home playoff game because they have better facilities (Goodman Stadium).

I posted my views on this year's fball this past Friday and they have not changed because we lost another one. I do take exception to some of the comments farther down the board which blame: the coach, the facilities the alumnni penetration (sounds obscene) etc. ad nauseum. We are what our record is (Bill Parcells). We lost more games than we won because the other teams played better. We lost yesterday because after a terrific start we screwed up on offense and did not hold on defense. No one gave up, Colgate played better when it mattered most. While I have not seen the locker room, the facilities are OK. We are not in against Notre Dame or Oklahoma. We play pretty much on a level field with our opponents. As a matter of fact the field was tipped in our favor against Albany & Duquense. Take those two games away and we are three & six against "fair" competition.

Thanks again to the team for an exciitng year. Good luck to the seniors. Remember the good moments.

Saw Coach F at half-time of Manh. game. He was in conversation with someone else so I only heard bits and pieces but I think I overheard him speaking about a dismissal/suspension. Anything new here or was it simply rehashing of what occurred early in the year with a few players? In speaking with him directly, he is high on Ricky B and Ryan B as additions to the OL next year and thinks Silvestro will compete for spot as well.

Ways to increase attendance

Let's face it, the marketing of Fordham sports is non-existent. Alumni mailings are nice, but are only part of the equation. Let's assume the baseline average per home game is 4,000 given the current marketing effort. I feel that given our NY location and what I think is a competitive and exciting level of 1-AA football, we could push that per game average to 6,000 and for certain games get a crowd approaching 10,000. Here's how (Frank, put down that putter in your office for a minute):

1. Media - is there a rule that 1-AA teams can't buy some radio spots on sports talk stations? Heavy spots on WFUV (Bob Ahrens, please help us out here). Take some $$ from the budget and roll it into WFUV promotions targeted specifically to Fordham alums. In addition, limited spots promoting Fordham football next year on WFAN or 1050 ESPN Radio. If that is not feasible, try local tri-state area stations in areas with concentrations of Fordham alums. Selected billboards on Metro North stations. Investigate a deal with a cable channel to cover Fordham football and basketball as part of a package deal--stations are constantly looking to fill airtime. Get contact with Tom Keegan at 1050 ESPN Radio--he went to Marquette and is a huge supporter of Jesuit schools. Make nice with the Westchester Journal News, try and get them to put a writer on previewing each game. Frank, take the guy golfing, that is what your free membership is for.

2. Students - Student attendance needs to be ramped up. Coach Foley and staff and captains should canvass classrooms each Friday to personally extend invitations to the game and let the students know whow much it would mean to the team to have their full support. Enlist a corporate sponsor like Coke or Pepsi to run a barbeque on Eddie's that would appeal to the students before a game.

3. Event Scheduling - this is critical. Fordham has 5-6 Saturdays a year to promote the school through football. Each game should be scheduled with this in mind. 1 home game is Homecoming (Fordham has done a terrific job with this lately). Another home game is Parents Weekend. I don't think football alumni day means anything, so I would do this: target alums who may have played other sports besides football or basketball, and use the game as an opportunity for them to get together, via a reunion brunch, or pre-game cocktails, whatever. Get the track, tennis, swimming alums, etc. Let the coaches of those sports brief the alums on their progress, and throw in a football game ticket. Schedule events like this around 2 other home games. One other event can be a Gridiron Club event for members and their families.

3. Opponent scheduling: another critical piece. Mid-major 1-AA's are not attractive without some other hook. If we must schedule them make it parents weekend. For the other games, Colgate and Lehigh are going to draw well, as will Columbia. Try to get other OOC teams that have cache as well as lots of NY alumni (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Villanova, Army come to mind). Try and put the less attractive games on the schedule early in the year while the weather is good, and make those the event games.

4. Build a rivalry with Holy Cross. Fordham needs a rivalry game. Lots of HC alums in the area. Schedule the HC game for the last game of the year, every year. Coordinate with HC as to alumni gatherings on campus for both schools. Schedule the opening basketball game the same day.

5. Tailgating. Tailgating in the parking lot is lame.If the parking garage gets built use the excess space for a grass alumni gathering space on Saturdays, intramural field otherwise.

6. Open up O'Keefe Commons post-game, cash bar to coaches, families, alums. After the game many want to stick around for a while, and not stand in the dark during October and November.

7. Coffey Field - not exactly an inviting venue. A little landcaping and trying to add a little charm to the place would make it more inviting. I need some ideas here, but our home field needs some updating.

I think that if Fordham does these things, it could build a nice increase from its current fan base. What do you guys think?

Cant it be for ftbl only.. and not cock eyed the way it is now.. let baseball have their own scoreboard in right field.. Cant Fordham have 1 decent looking venue... we are a University not a High School

Didn't see game, but guessing we made costly mistakes (e.g., turnovers, penalties) that cost us dearly -- again. We were competetive in every game this year which is nice, but by the final game of the year discipline and team chemistry should have improved and led us to wins in at least 1 of the last 2 two games. The fact that we were unable to win any close games in '04 is a reflection of coaching (preparation and sideline) pure and simple. Also, Lehigh, Colgate and Lafayette don't seem to have any trouble reloading year after year, yet we drop to 5-6. Also, they're perfectly happy with this level of competion. Yet after 3 good seasons, our alumni are talking about jumping to D1?!? Gimme a break. We've got a long way to go before we're in the class of those aforementioned schools and we will never belong in D1. I expect wins in the Patriot League and an ocassional trip to the 1-AA Playoffs, as we all should. Foley's got a lot of work to do for next season and has a lot to prove.

5-6 and he inherited a decent core of experienced players, albeit with a young quarterback. Not too good of a job by Coach Foley.

There are no free lunches. This guy does not get 4 years to prove himself. He should be closely scrutinized next season.

This program is well funded, in great shape and there are no excuses.
