Hey there Fordham faithful! We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and we wish everyone a happy new year. Here is your winter holiday edition of the Fordham Athletics Round-Up, where the top stories include: Tad Kornegay Receives Three More National Honors, Marcus Stout and Bryant Dunston Combine For Three Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Awards, Fordham Announces 2005 Athletic Hall of Fame Class, and Men’s Basketball Takes Down Richmond.
Question of the Week: The 23-point margin of victory for Fordham over Richmond is the Rams’ second largest margin of victory in an Atlantic 10 game. What is the largest? (Answer at the end of the Round-Up)
TAD KORNEGAY NAMED FIRST TEAM ASSOCIATED PRESS AND AFCA ALL-AMERICAN, WHILE ALSO GARNERING I-AA.ORG ALL-STAR STATUS
Senior Tad Kornegay
Fordham senior defensive back Tad Kornegay (Trenton, NJ/Hamilton West) has been named to the I-AA.org All-Star Team it was announced on January 4th. He is one of 40 players to be honored by I-AA.org and one of only two Patriot League players on the team. I-AA.org was launched in 2001 as a source for those seeking news of NCAA Division I-AA football.
This is one of a long line of awards for Kornegay, a consensus First Team All-American, this fall. He was named 2004 First Team Associated Press, American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), Walter Camp Division I-AA and Sports Network I-AA All-American over the past month. Kornegay was also a finalist for the 2004 Buck Buchanan Award as the NCAA I-AA Defensive Player of the Year as awarded by the Sports Network, finishing 14th among the voting.
Kornegay, the 2004 Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, is the second Ram in as many years to earn consensus First Team All-America honors, joining wide receiver Javarus Dudley who was a consensus All-American in 2003.
This fall, Kornegay was named First Team All-Patriot League for the second straight season, leading the league in interceptions with eight while twice setting a school varsity record with three interceptions in a game. He first accomplished the feat against Duquesne on September 25th and then repeated it on October 9th versus Brown. The eight interceptions also tied for the second best single season performance in the Patriot League, tying Kornegay with Bucknell’s Kevin Eiben who had eight picks in 2000. The league record is nine, set by Holy Cross’ Dave Murphy in 1987.
The eight interceptions registered by Kornegay this fall was tied for second best in the NCAA and was third best in Fordham single season history. For his career, Kornegay recorded 14 interceptions, tied for second best in Fordham history and third best in Patriot League history. Kornegay also broke up a team-high eight passes, second best in the conference, while recording 61 total tackles, 48 solo, third best on the squad, and registered two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
MARCUS STOUT AND BRYANT DUNSTON COMBINE FOR THREE ATLANTIC 10 WEEKLY ROOKIE AWARDS
Freshman Marcus Stout
Over winter break, Fordham Men’s Basketball freshmen Marcus Stout (Southfield, MI/Renaissance) and Bryant Dunston (Queens, NY/St. John’s Prep) combined to receive three Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors, as Stout was given the honor on December 26th and January 9th, while Dunston received it on January 2nd.
The freshmen duo started their run with Stout being named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week on December 26th. Stout finished the game shooting 5-9 from the field and 4-7 from three-point land as well as 2-3 from the free throw stripe.
Dunston then received his third Rookie weekly award of the season on January 2nd, becoming the first Ram to earn three A-10 Rookie of the Week honors since Bevon Robin received the honor four times in the 1997-98 season. In three games that week, Dunston posted three double-doubles to average 16.3 points and 12.3 rebounds, along with 3.3 blocks a game, and was named to the All-Tournament team at the UCF Holiday Invitational. He opened the week with 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds in a 50-49 loss to Charleston Southern in the first round of UCF Holiday Invitational in Orlando on December 28th. He also had five steals and a pair of blocks in that game and then he recorded 20 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocked shots in a 65-61 loss to Central Florida in the consolation game on December 29th. Dunston closed the week with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and four rejections at Western Kentucky on January 1st. On the week, he shot 18-40 (.450) from the field, 1-2 (.500) from three, and 12-18 (.667) from the line.
Stout then repeated as Rookie of the Week on January 9th. On the week, Stout averaged 17.5 ppg, 3.0 rpg and 2.5 steals in two games. He moved into the starting line-up against Saint Joseph’s on January 5th and responded with a game-high 17 points and four steals in a 53-50 loss. He then netted a game-high 18 points, hitting six of his eight three-point attempts, in a 79-56 win over Richmond on January 8th. Stout shot 52.1% from the field on the week (12-23), including a sizzling 52.3% from three-point range (11-21). He has now scored in double figures in six straight games, averaging 16.0 ppg over that span to raise his scoring average from 8.6 ppg to 12.0 ppg.
The Rams (5-8, 1-1) will next travel to Philadelphia face the Temple University Owls in an Atlantic 10 contest on Wednesday, January 12th at 7:00 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL SITS AT 5-8 OVERALL AFTER TAKING DOWN RICHMOND
Freshman Marcus Stout
After dropping three of four games by four points or less and being held to 50 points and shooting 39.1% from the field in their Atlantic 10 opening-night loss to Saint Joseph’s on Wednesday, the Rams were ready for a breakout game. And they got one today as Marcus Stout scored a game-high 18 points, hitting six of his eight three-point attempts, and Bryant Dunston and Jermaine Anderson each added 15 points to lead Fordham University (5-8, 1-1) to a 79-56 Atlantic 10 win over the University of Richmond in the Rose Hill Gym. The win snaps a four-game Fordham losing streak on the year.
The Rams quickly erased the memory of Wednesday’s game, scoring 44 points, shooting 51.7% (15-29) from the field, in the first half to take a 44-22 lead at the intermission. Stout led the Rams with 12 of his game-high 18 in the half while Jermaine Anderson added eight.
The Spiders led by one, 11-10, following a Jamaal Scott jumper with 13:23 left in the first half when Fordham would go on 16-1 run to take a 26-12 lead with 8:42 remaining in the half. Jermaine Anderson led the run with five points while Stout capped the run with one of his four first half three-pointers.
After another Scott jumper cut the Richmond deficit to 12, 26-14, Fordham used a 14-4 spurt to take a commanding 40-18 lead with two minutes left in the half. The Rams did most of their damage from three point range in the run, with Stout hitting two treys and Jermaine Anderson and Cory McCrae one each.
Richmond never threatened in the second half as the Rams maintained a 20-point lead throughout the period.
Fordham held Richmond to shooting 35.5% (22-62) from the field while outrebounding the Spiders 45-29. The Rams shot 52.6% from the field, including a season-high 52.4% (11-21) from three-point range.
Stout added four rebounds and two assists to go along with his 18 points while Dunston grabbed eight rebounds and registered two blocks with his 15 points. Jermaine Anderson led the Rams with six assists while Mushon Ya’akosi scored 11 points and added ten rebounds for his second double-double of the year.
Scott led the Spiders with 14 points while adding three steals and Courtney Nelson finished with 12 points. Gaston Moliva recorded 10 points, eight rebounds and had a game-high four blocks.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL STRUGGLES WITH INJURY BUG AS CONFERENCE PLAY OPENS
Junior Jada Jefferson
The Fordham Women’s Basketball team knew coming into the season that they had a tough schedule this season and that the team had to stay healthy to succeed.
Playing the seventh toughest schedule in the country according to the lastest RPI rankings by the WBCA (1/10), things have unfortunately not turned out that way, as the team lost LaToya Chalmers and Stacey Price to season-ending injuries before the season the started, and most recently this week lost Kyshawn Ruff, Monica Mack, and Erin Smith for an undetermined amount of time to various injuries in games against George Washington, Virginia Tech, and Temple.
The short-handed team though has put together to gutsy performances in their past two contests against nationally ranked Virginia Tech and defending Atlantic 10 champion, Temple.
Despite a valiant second half comeback, a career-high 21 points from Jada Jefferson, and 20 points from Monica Mack, the Fordham Rams fell to the 25th-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies (11-2), 80-67, at the Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, VA.
In the first half, the Hokies took the early lead at 6-4, following two baskets from Erin Gibson. After the Rams tied the game at eight on a Jada Jefferson jumper, Virginia Tech got three-pointers by Carrie Mason and Christie Marrone, as well as a three-point play by Gibson, to take a 17-10 lead with 12:08 remaining. The Hokies then outscored Fordham, 13-6, over the next 4:20, capped by a three-point play by Gibson to take a 29-16 lead. Virginia Tech, on the strength of shooting 64% for the period, would go on to lead by 17, 42-25, heading to the locker room.
In the second half, Fordham came out firing on a 10-3 run to start the period, cutting the lead to 45-35 with four points each from Monica Mack and Jefferson. The Rams continued to inch closer, down eight, 47-39, following a Silva jumper with 15:09 to go. Fordham’s surge continued after a three-pointer by Mack and a lay-in by Jefferson to make it a three-point game, 51-48. The Hokies then pushed the lead back to eight, 58-50, after a free throw by Britney Anderson with 8:05 left. The Hokies’ lead got back to double figures at 12 points, but two Mack baskets put the game at 66-56 with 3:11 remaining. The Rams would not quit though, cutting the lead to six on a three-pointer by Mack with 2:02 left. Virginia Tech though would score seven straight free throws, four of those off of an intentional and technical foul to Fordham, to get the lead back to double figures, winning the game by a 13-point margin.
For Fordham, Jada Jefferson scored a career-high 21 points on 10-for-11 shooting, which was the second-best shooting performance of any Atlantic 10 player this season, before fouling out with under a minute left in the game. Monica Mack tied a season-high with 20 points to go with five assists and three steals, before leaving the game with a broken nose, while Vanessa Silva had 14 points and three blocks.
Then, without the services of senior Monica Mack, a short-handed Fordham Rams put together a gutsy effort against the Temple Owls, falling by a final score of 67-51 in the Rose Hill Gym. This was Temple’s eighth straight win, putting their record at 11-3 overall, 3-0 in the Atlantic 10, while Fordham goes to 4-11 on the year, 0-2 in the conference.
The Rams hung tough with the Owls throughout the first half with the Rams down four points, 18-14, after a Jada Jefferson jumper with 7:25 left. After Temple got back up six points, the Rams, already short-handed without Mack for the game, lost junior Erin Smith to an injury with five and a half minutes left in the period. Fordham was able to get the deficit to within four points with just under two minutes left after a lay-up by Jefferson, but Temple’s Cynthia Jordan would make a half-court three-pointer as time expired to give the Owls a 31-23 lead at halftime.
At the half, Temple’s Candice Dupree led all scorers with 12 points, while Fordham’s Joy Johnson was the Rams’ top scorer with nine points and five rebounds off the bench.
In the second half, the Owls used a 13-2 run to start the period, enhancing their lead to 19 points, 44-25, on the strength of back-to-back three-pointers by Kamesha Hairston with 16:04 remaining. Temple would get up by as many as 22 points in the game, but Fordham cut into the lead making it a 14-point game late on two Vanessa Silva free throws, eventually falling by a 16-point margin.
For Fordham, Joy Johnson recorded her second double-double of the year, tying a career-high with 19 points to go with 10 rebounds, while Jada Jeffersonn also scored her second double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Vanessa Silva added nine points, eight rebounds and three blocks for the Rams with Lara Hanson having a game-high six assists.
For the Owls, Candice Dupreee had a team-high16 points, while Kamesha Hairston had 13 points and six rebounds. Cynthia Jordan also added nine points and six assists.
The Fordham Women’s Basketball Team will next be in action on Friday, January 14th, as they start a three-game road trip at Atlantic 10 opponent Richmond, beginning at 7:00 PM.
