Subject: An Open Letter to Fr. McShane

Dear Fr. McShane,

I write this letter here because I would like for other Fordham people to post support for my statements below. The release of our future football schedules makes it apparent that we are at a crisis point in the history of Fordham athletics.

For 20 years our athletic program, under the direction of Athletic Director Frank McGlaughlin and VP Jeffrey Gray, has suffered from poor leadership, underfunding, poor facilities and a general lack of professionalism. Now we are going back to playing football against essentially Div. 3 schools out of conference. Our other teams, particularly basketball, have suffered tremendous damage from the ill-fated decision to join the Patriot League in all sports in the '80's. We are still climbing out from under the damage from that incredibly short-sighted move.

I know I speak for the vast majority of alums and students when I say that the time has come for a change in leadership for Fordham athletics. We can no longer afford to be embarrassed on an ongoing basis by the lack of professional leadership here. You must be aware by now of the substantial dissatisfaction among all important Fordham constituencies with our athletic leadership and staff. We are one of the few Div. 1 schools in the US without an athletic marketing department, for example.

Please, stop the bleeding now. Allowing this incompetence to continue will only cause long term damage to the relationship between Fordham grads and our fine institution. It is taking it's toll now. We know you will act responsibly and do the right thing.

I say this from the heart.
