Subject: What are guys need to work on

I trust our boys worked hard over the summer and hopefully upgraded their skills. Here's my arm chair analysis of what each team member needs to take himself "to the next level:

West: outside shot, facing the basket, driving skills

Sato: DRIVING TO THE HOOP. He can shoot the 3 like Curly Neal - he just needs this to be the total package (sorry Smydra)

Chalmers: playing under control, lower turnovers. FREE THROWS!

Young: more offense.

Coleman: I hope he did not miss one buffet over the summer. He needs some beef and better foot work.

Jackson: Made some Freshman mistakes and played out of control sometimes. Heard he beefed up a little and has worked on his outside shot. He will need that b/c he will not be needed to bang down low this year.

Thad: It will be interesting how he works with the talent he has. Almost an entire new offense is needed b/c of the new additions. He will have to have a better motion offense and maybe even press more to fully utilize all of the bodies. We can wear down the other teams without any real loss of talent. I hope he makes ample use of his subs.

I don't know enough about the other guys to offer any opinion on how they might improve.

[> Dave Young - don't really care about his offense so much this year. He has shown that he has ability, albeit streaky, to score. I hope, most of all, DY has learned to defend. He may well match up against teams best player (until Sato and he switch) and I'd like him to spell Sato some on the defensive end. Plus, I'd like him banging in the paint - he's got wide shoulders and a big body for a 3. -- Matsushira, 15:46:05 10/17/02 Thu

[> Young was really coming on at the end of last year, and if that continues he will be a huge asset to the team. He is the type of player that coaches like. He does a little bit of everything. With all the attention that the other kids draw, I see Jackson and Young doing very well with their opportunities. And I think you need to switch the "FREE THROWS" from Chalmers to Sato. -- The House of Humboldt, 21:26:15 10/18/02 Fri

[> I have been most concerned about Chalmers pretty much all summer. With J. Williams's departure, he becomes even more critical. If Chalmers can reduce his turnovers by just one a game, and up his assists by just one a game, he begins to look like one of the top points in the country. If he can do that, and continue to act a a scoring threat, this team will be lethal. -- Homeskillet, 10:47:08 10/21/02 Mon

[> [> I agree with you. Chalmers is an ace in the whole. Everybody concentrates on West and Young, but Chalmers quarterbacked this team to an outstanding record. He also likes the ball in pressure situations, much like Lenny Brown used to. If we rage through the non conference, people will start talking about the L-Train. -- The Devine Humbodt, 10:59:08 10/21/02 Mon
