I really can't see how you can argue that Mulder is the one IN love and not Scully hairytoe. It doesn't make any sense to me, because of one simple fact: Mulder is too busy with HIS quest. That's the reason I think that Fowley nearly dying was such big wake up call for Mulder. Before that time, he was so involved in his quest that he didn't bother to consider Scully's feelings or desires and he kind of took her for granted. He decided to let her know how he felt and when it didn't stir anything up in Scully, he went right back to being obsessed with his quest.

Scully on the other hand is just along for the ride and helps Mulder when he needs her. Mulder's the only one that really investigates and follows any kind of lead he can find. So much so that people he doesn't even know come to him when they have strange cases, they never ask for Scully. It's true that Scully has a few things to gain from working on the XF, but she doesn't do anything to come closer to reaching these goals, she just waits for Mulder to come up with something that they can both work on. She may stand to win something out of this quest, but her lack of effort to help it along, clearly shows that it's not her's. With all that free time, she's the only one who really has time to fall IN love, and she has.

Even when Mulder's not working he does X-Filey things, Dana doesn't, so she unfortunately is less interesting that Mulder. The extra time goes to Mulder, not because of sexism, but because he IS the most intriguing character. CC will have a chance to try an show us just how interesting Scully is next season since DD will only do 11 eps, but I doubt that I'll be suprised.

Mulder's an easy going guy, he likes to joke even when he's about to die. Him joking with Scully may look like flirting, but it's not. He did invite Scully to hit baseballs, but that's just because he'd just heard a great story about one of his favorite sports, and decided to share his love of the game with his freind. Besides, Scully was probably home bored out of her mind, doing nothing :-). He did move in for the new year's kiss, but it's because he knows how emotionally incapacitated Scully is, and if he hadn't moved in, it never would have happened. I'm sure that if he was with any other foxy lady at that time, he would have done the same thing. He didn't try to take the kiss any further, so that tells me that it was just a freindly new year's kiss between freinds and nothing more.

Mulder's no longer has any family, he's wreckless (I still don't know why he punched that FBI accountant), and he knows that Scully still has her mom and brother. If he decided not to include her in something that could be dangerous, I think that's a normal reaction and not him being overprotective. Besides, she wouldn't have had the guts to do what Mulder (who has nothing to lose), did when he got on that alien ship, so why bother with taking her?

"Requiem" may have made alot of philes reconsider their stance on the MSR, but I'm just fine where I am. :-)
