I would have argued that Mulder is in love with Scully, but not vice versa. I would have argued that Scully's no-nonsense treatment of the women (and men too!!) and her "devotion" to Mulder are more products of her personality than of her "love" for Mulder. I don't think it's fair or accurate to say that all Scully has invested in the X-files is Mulder. It IS her quest too. Yes, she did start out as Mulder's sidekick, but Chris Carter and Gillian Anderson have skillfully and believably transformed her into an integral part of the X-files and transformed the X-files into an integral part of her. They have done this 1)through Scully's personal losses- her sister, cancer, her fert... oops maybe not that one 2) by creating a solid medical interest for Scully that she could only get through the X-files and 3) yes, Mulder-- if nothing else, then just as a friend and as her partner. Unfortunately I do have to agree with you about the fact that not enough depth has been shown into Scully's character. However, I don't think this means that Scully is any less interesting or less whole than Mulder. Both DD and GA spend most of their on-screen time doing their X-filey things (as they should!!!) but when there's extra time to give us extra insight into the characters, it usually goes to the male actor. I wouldn't make any great inferences there about Scully living only for Mulder. To borrow from your post, Mulder DOES occupy all of Scully's time, and it's not his doing, but neither is it Scully's. This one belongs entirely to the show. (This is why All Things presented such great possibility! IMHO, I'm sorry it fell short.)

I would have argued that Mulder is the one who's in love. He cares about her, he tries to spend time with her, he flirts with her, he tries to do what he thinks will make her happy. I don't think that his "crush" ended after Triangle. I might believe that he cooled off a little after her perceived rejection, but he hasn't stopped loving her. The Unnatural! Who invited Scully to the field in the middle of the night to teach her to hit? Millenium! Who moved in for the kiss? Requiem! Who turned rabidly overprotective? Mulder. True, he doesn't show "jealousy" the way one might perceive Scully's skepticism, but again I'd argue that it has less to do with the MSR than with his personality.

NOW, I'm really not sure what I would argue on the whole Mulder and Scully relationship thing. I'm, like, sooooo confused! Requiem sure was a doozy in terms of redifining the Mulder and Scully relationship. At first, I didn't like the whole Scully being pregnant thing. I thought it was sensationalistic and stupid. I jumped off the fence and became a noromo. I'm still not a fan of that plotline, but I accept it and am (reluctantly) exploring the possibilities it presents. Unfortunately, most of the possibilities fall on the shipper side of the fence. Dammit! My point is that I think *everybody* has to rethink their stances on the MSR. It's obviously now going to become a part of the mythology (since they've killed everthing else that the mythology originally consisted of.)
