Hey k & h!
I assume that the "better place" compares the walk-in life to the abducted life, not to the previous home life. My understanding was that at the point where they became walk-ins, there was no turning back. Fate had already set the pieces in motion and if they hadn't been "walk-ined" they would have suffered a horrible abduction or other violent death. So in that sense, it was a "better place".
I agree with you both about the diary scene. Something about it didn't resonate well with me. I couldn't read Scully's reaction at all and never knew whether she was buying it, or skeptical about it but not wanting to pour salt in the wound. Something tells me she wasn't fully convinced that it was Samantha's diary, since she didn't seem to react as strongly as I would assume had that been the case. I did like the nuance of Scully nodding her head as Mulder read some of the frightened passages about the abductions, though. Almost like Scully was reliving her own nightmare.
But although it wasn't perfect, I really liked it. Aack--does this mean kande and I disagree about something!?!
