I learned to play guitar on my daddy's old Harmony 3/4-sized birch hollow body. He ordered it from a catalog in the spring of 1935 when he was 13. It cost him his whole year's allowance of $2.50 - a handsome sum back then, when a penny would buy you a steak. I posted a picture of it here on the board...along with shots of my other guitars...a couple of years ago. I call it Old Dad.

It still plays, and hasn't fallen apart, but the sound it makes doesn't quite measure up to my Hummingbird Dreadnought. Considering the fact it's a kid's guitar, just the fact it still exists is amazing. It never had a case and lived in the attic until I was 15, when my dad decided he'd never play it again and gave it to me to fool with. I'd lost my violin in an accident, and since I used to play it 4 hours a day, he figured I'd be needing a "musician's fix" every once in a while. I had no guitar teacher, like I had a violin teacher, so I was on my own to figure out how to make noise from it. The first thing I did was get a case for it at a music store. I think it cost me ten bucks, and still exists...no kidding!

The worst part of it is that the fret board is also made of birch...which doesn't hold up under wear...and has serious depressions in it from my fingers. Dad never played it much, and when he did, his fingers were so stiff from the hard work he did all his life that he could only play lead with one finger at a time. This left the fret board pretty pristine, but filthy from lack of use. I had it worn down to bare wood in less than 6 months! Bad kid!
