I well remember this issue. It hit the stands the day I landed in the USA, a refugee from the maelstrom of my life in England. The other jarring thing in the headlines that day was the discovery of the Manson Family victims. All I recall was thinking that Id somehow gotten it all wrong, that returning to the US was a stupid damned idea. I sat in the back room of a friends husbands realty office in Boston, where I crashed for a week, reading the Rolling Stone article, crying, and wondering how they had gotten even the simplest facts wrong. My friend, a relic from my late 50s days in a Massachusetts boarding school, couldnt understand why I was so emotional about one of the Rolling Stones. It was her reaction that caused me to bury that part of my life for years and years. Only my London friends who had been a part of it all ever knew the whole story. To this day they remain the only ones who know it all.
But that article really blew.
