You are so lucky to have seen the Stones with Brian, Linda! I wish I'd been old enough to go, or even care. LOL. I think that Brian's multi-instrumentalism (is that a word?) overshadowed his guitar work. Except for his slide work, which is the only thing he occasionally still gets credit for. I have to tell you, I was stunned when I saw his name on that list. I totally didn't expect that. I think I still haven't recovered. LOL.

When I think of Brian playing a Firebird, two images immediately come to my mind. One of Brian in the pinstriped suit with the bandaged hand, and second, his stellar slide guitar performance of 'No Expectations' from the Rock and Roll Circus film.

I tried finding a clip of Brian playing NE on You Tube but came up empty. That sure was one of his brightest moments with the band! He totally makes this song.

Of note, this is one list Brian is on where he isn't the most tragic figure. I'd have to give Allen Collins the edge over Brian when it came to unfortunate sets of circumstance combined with drugs and alcohol.

Ah yes, Allen Collins. Laz and I have had this discussion before. For those who don't know him, here's a very brief history: Allen married his high-school sweetheart after making her pregnant at 18: she was the great love of his life. Allen survived the Skynyrd plane crash, escaping with a broken neck and an arm injury so bad that he came within a hair's breath of losing it. Three years later, his wife was expecting their third child when she suffered complications from the pregnancy and died. She was 27, he was 28. He never recovered from the loss and started medicating himself with heavy doses of drugs and booze. In early 1986, he was involved in a drunken driving accident that killed his female passenger (she has been called his GF but she really was just a hanger-on) and paralyzed him from the chest down. He never walked or played guitar again. He died four years later of a pulmonary infection which resulted from the paralysis.

And that's only the Readers Digest version. There's more tragedy I haven't even mentioned.
