I keep saying that the campaign to belittle Brian in his own band was already well underway when we in the U.S. first found out they even existed.

When we started getting distributions of their first 3 albums here, the jacket backs were strangely devoid of any real information about the band. All the magazine publicity, even the "Rolling Stones Only" magazines, never mentioned that Brian was anymore important than just the rhythm guitarist, who also played harmonica and sang background vocals.

He was already being banned from the position of spokesman for them, and as an American, all I got to know of him was that he was "the cute one!" Though I had a leg up on the fact it was Brian doing all those fabulous licks on the earlier tracks, not Keith, I was still too distracted by everything to really sit down and think over what was going on there. I think Americans kind of got "cheated" regarding Brian Jones...but that's just my opinion.
