Hi Delilah:

Gered had a great set up at the Art Gallery and the entire showroom was dedicated to his blown up photograph's (almost all of the Stones (he had some Hendrix and others as well) in exquisite frames. Anyway, when I arrived I noticed he had Between The Buttons playing in the back ground to add to the mood. It was great!!

When we met he asked how I heard of the event and what brought me in. I told him I was a huge Stones fan but a bigger Brian Jones fan. So he started walking around with me and told me various stories about Brian. How it was Brian whom he first met (the fist Stone he met as well) in 1964... how it was Brian who changed his "viewpoint of what they were like personally". He told me Brian (first encounter) was charming, smart and had an excellent sense of humor. What was interesting to me was that by the time Gered started to follow the Stones the following year on tour Brian (according to Gered) had already changed personality wise. I specifically remember him saying that Brian was more withdrawn and not as outgoing as was just month's before... still Brian and the rest of the Stones were, in general, a lot of fun to be around. They all missed home, loved one's, family etc... remember they were only in their early 20's!!

I remember when I asked about Anita and Brian how Gered said she was beautiful, intimidating etc... but a terrible influence on Brian. Taking drugs and doing terrible things to other people just to see how they would react etc... Gered did not trust or like being around Brian and Anita at all. It was one thing when Brian was around the other Stones but around Anita watch out!! He told me they fought often and one time Brian threatened to jump off the roof of a building because Anita had done something to Brian.

Gered told me of all of the Stones Brian changed the most from the beginning to the end of his time photographing the Stones. He said drugs, Anita, the stress of the tours etc... had a lot to do with this... he remembered them all sitting around a table eating dinner and Brian just passing out face first into his food. How they literally had to prop Brian up so that he wouldn't keel over in the studio, yet then would play his guitar/instrument piece perfectly. Gered said that Brian was light years ahead of the Stones when it came to musicianship and if he had not been there the songs that we all know today so well would never have been made. In other words a lot of songs (Jagger/Richards credits) were changed due to Brian's influence. All of the other Stones were concerned about Brian's destructive behavior (partying etc...) and they DID CARE about Brian but they didn't know what to do about it. They were literally going from point A to point B so fast that they had little time to worry too much. THEY had their own responsibility's to meet.

All in all he said that Brian was just a "twisted little boy" who never seemed to grow up. You never knew who you were going to see from day to day... one day nice the next day... stay away!! Gered said by the end of 1966 he stayed away from Brian as much as possible. Yet Brian always had the charm to bring Gered back around and then whack!!

Oh I almost forgot... the photo's of Brian in his home (1966). He said that Brian's place ( I believe this was the place where Brian and Anita stayed with the band Pretty Things) was a total party house with bottles, papers, clothes, records everywhere on the floor. He said that he had the feeling that if wasn't careful he might step on somebody still passed out underneath all of the mess!! He took a ton of photo's that day but somehow lost all of the negatives except for the two photo's you see in his book. That was his BIGGEST regret that he lost those. He also said that Brian's mantle where you can see the Stones music awards in the background was the only area that Brian kept organized in the entire pad Brian was living.

Like I said before Gered had all kinds of nice and bad things to say about Brian (it literally was a 50-50 split). I kept wanting to ask more questions but after 20-30 minutes I could tell Gered was ready for me to buy something (some other people finally showed up as well). So I bought his book (I had little money back then) that he autographed. He then said I was very knowledgeable about Brian/Stones and he gave me two extra negatives at no charge. What a great guy and very nice/charming. His last memory of seeing Brian was in 1968 at a club where they said hello and that was it!!

Hope these stories are fun for you all (they were for me). Oh and the book is the same one you showed me Delilah!! It's out now at Barnes & Noble...

George
