I cant say I knew Levon, but I did meet him several times. He was a customer in my bookstore, The Juggler, as was Garth Hudson. Both men were charming. Levon and I spoke about books for the most part, and when The Band jammed at the Cafe Espresso (Depresso), I always tried to show up to listen. I actually hunted down Big Pink in West Saugerties once because I simply wanted to see it. Didnt go to the door or anything. It was just a house painted pink.
I had one conversation with Levon that I do recall. It was when the book The Exorcist was a best seller. My husband kept a stack of copies on the front counter, but in the afternoons, when I worked, I refused to sell it to anyone since I thought it was such a piece of crap! Levon came in to buy it and I wouldnt let him. He was sort of surprised, but I told him he could come back in the morning when Matt was working! He thought that was hilarious. I dont know if he ever did buy the awful thing!
I was always, and still am, a huge fan of The Band. Brian would have been too, of course!! Their sound was right up his alley!
