Harsh words!! First off, Brian loved Anita. OK, it was maybe a very codependent, self loathing kind of love, but he loved her. At first they were fine together, but Anita was easily bored, always trying to up the ante, and it became destructive. Ive had similar relationships, and years later have realised what I thought was love maybe wasnt. Maybe it was just passion. Whatever, Brian never had the luxury of that sort of backlooking, but still, he was able to realise the relationship sucked. Still, at the first flush, yes, he loved her. Then he went off into a spate of needy girls. Linda Keith was needy, very. He was fond of her, but love? Im not thinking so. Same for Suki. Very fond of her, but not love and he told me that. She did love him though, and he cherished it because he was the needy one by then. But girls dropping like flies from drug overdoses irritated him, he panicked and wanted to run. As far as his even being able to love given his inherent self loathing? I dont buy it for a minute. Of course he could love, but he could neither commit nor provide what a girl needed. Had he lived longer and conquered his demons, maybe, but I doubt it. I cant see Brian ever marrying, at least for any decent length, because he just didnt have that sense of commitment to another that most people have, nor was he particularly conflicted by not having it. But dont confuse that for an inability to love. He was a very complicated boy, but good to his friends.
