The reason I believe Tom was afraid the murder would have reflected badly on the group is because of who murdered him. A known liar and thief was sent over to Brian’s to work on his place and "keep an eye" on him and ends up killing him? Tom (and others) knew the rumor mill would go crazy, which is why he tried to cover it up. Funny thing is that the more they tried to cover it up and shut up witnesses it just created more outrageous rumors that continue more than forty years later.
