I think we talked about this before. I don't recall XF stating on screen that we were in THE final season until late in season 9 when they knew they wouldn't be renewed.

I know several sitcoms have taken back the "final season" but Lost is a very expensive show with a large cast that I'm sure wants to move on. Filming in Hawaii can't be as easy as holding on to the Friends set for another year. Plus, long ago the producers promised this as a way of placating the fans who wondered "will they drag this out forever?" The ratings have dipped over the years so it's better to go out on your own terms. One wonders if they would do a film or a sequel but so far no word on those. The producers did say it won't be an ending that explains everything so be ready for some ambiguity.

If after all this they do say "one more season", I'd stop watching. That would be a slap in the face to all the fans. They are saying "final season" with each episode and counting down how many are left. I really don't think they can go back on that now. Unless the last season gets super ratings that put it into the top 10 again which I don't see happening. I know so many people who have given up on the show, just a hard core group remains. I think shows with an overriding mystery like XF illustrated how not to do it. The Lost makers know they can't leave us hanging forever.
