I don't actually know much about Hellboy. But as far as Harry Potter, yes he was raised by awful people but he was also being very closely watched by Albus Dumbledore and who knows who else, and you have to believe that if Harry were being adversely affected by his guardians that Albus would have intervened. We find out in the 5th book that he had been in touch with Petunia anyway

Also I think that Harry is a very extraordinary child who was probably able to overcome his upbringing and probably a lot of children wouldn't have been able to upstand it.

I do think that it is a staple in storytelling for children/heroes to overcome adversity and turn out all the better for it. I think both of those things can apply to Hellboy and Harry Potter, though obviously they had different circumstances.

As far as how it's based in reality, it has been my personal experience that nature will do what it wants, but nuture certainly has its influence as well. I don't have children, but much like in IG's family myself and my siblings turned out vastly differently despite being raised by the same two loving parents. Two of us took the standard route, college, jobs, houses, etc. and two of us rebelled and we had in our family some drugs, a high school drop out, a pregnant teenager, and more. Our parents didn't treat us any differently and yet we all took very different directions. However into adulthood that nuture stuck by and now that we're all adults we are all on our feet and successful (or on our way to it). I think that if the four of us had been raised by bad parents such as the Dursleys, we probably would have had the same personalities and same issues, but without the parental support would have ended up very lost in the world.
