I think the likelihood would have been more that a child raised in the conditions Harry Potter was would have turned out bad. But there are a lot of real-life "horror stories" of kids raised in some pretty horrendous conditions who turned into normal, stable adults capable of having loving relationships. So you can't ever say for sure.

Having raised two children to adulthood and a third into her mid-teens, I can say that even if you're talking about behavior less "hellacious" kids raised by the same parents with the same rules, religious upbringing, etc. can exhibit some VERY different behaviors during their teenage and young adult years.

So far we've had one who truly gave us NO real trouble; good grades, good attitude, no substance abuse or sexual activity (at least none that we're aware of) and now at a prestigious college, with most of the expenses paid by scholarships and grants. And another who — although very much loved by us — did all the "bad" things parents don't want their kids to do; failed classes, skipped school, came home drunk, got high, experienced early sexual activity, got picked up by the cops, etc.

So even with the same genetic makeup AND the same home environment, kids can behave in very different ways.

The youngest, so far, seems to be on the "good teenager" path, but we've got a couple more years to go and are well aware that things could change.
