Whilst Wayne Rooney is, without question, the most recognisable local youth, a challenger is emerging from the underground.
Straight out of the mean streets of Breck Road, 18 year old Billy Willis is starting to create something of a stir. But who is he you might well ask? A good question, but one that I guarantee you won't be posing in a years time. For Billy Willis - aka, "Billy", "Willo", "Notorious TWAT", "that little shit next door but one", "our Bernadette's eldest" - is actually none other than hot new rapper, "30 Pence".
Having had the usual chequered background - including expulsion from Our Lady of the Worthless Miracle, and a spell in a Young Offenders Institute - 30 Pence has turned his experiences into something positive, and is currently writing some of the hardest toons to ever come out of Liverpool. Indeed, he makes reference to his period of incarceration on his sought after single on Norris Green's "Borstal Bopper" records - "How Much is that Holiday in Limbo (the one that is not quite a jail)". Sample lyrics include, "nice one. Is right. I may be banged up, but where I live is shite".
But fame comes with a price. Already there have been one or two local incidents involving 30 Pence, and those who would seek to steal his crown. Only last week, Anthony "Tony" Hughes, aka, "Queg Mummy", gave 30 Pence a "V" sign out of the window of the 14C, and there have been several incidents of muttered threats against 30 Pence outside a number of local off-licences and in the foyer of that Showcase Cinema. One tracksuited rap rival was even heard to comment, "I fuckin' decked the beaut, la, in 2nd year". Leaving all that aside, though, 30 Pence is an act that you are going to be hearing a lot more from. Now clearly too big for "Borstal Bopper", the majors are already starting to gather, with Everton's own Suge Knight, Kevin Campbell, reportedly at the front of the queue.
The sound of young Liverpool. Wayne Rooney, Our Anthony off Brookside, that lad in the Echo who keeps getting ASBO's. You must now add 30 Pence to this glittering array of teen talent. When the street rocks, it will sound like this.
