Not so sure. Seems like visions (in fiction) are frequently either self-authenticating, or the person who has them has a couple of creepy experiences in which they turn out to be true, and then they start trusting them no matter how they got them.

I even think it's possible one of the emissaries of this big PTB battle gives his powers to him precisely in order to have him make his stupid choice and destroy whoever the ultimate target or targets are (not to mention himself).

Presumably we've got some pro-chaos and some anti-chaos guys, and if there is indeed a Nyarlathotep guy my understanding from the Lovecraft folk is that he would be on the chaos side. Plus supposedly he has a charm of manner and could sucker someone like Xander, who is short on friends (especially male ones, as has been beaten into our heads) and desperate to be liked, into trusting him.

On the other hand, it's not entirely clear to me that the chaos folk would have it in for Buffy, who is a bit on the chaotic side herself. And who knows who the emissary of the anti-chaos PTBs would be.
