• He was sat on a couch, staring at the waits of a million people mingling around in their finer wear, in his own suit which was .. well, uncomfortable to say the least, waiting for her. When he saw her on the stairs, he stopped himself from jumping right up, taking a moment instead, to savor the look of her in finery - he was beginning already to think of weddings and keeping her the way that she deserved.. • She excepted the glass of champagne from his father and engaged in a little conversation with his father and his Grandfather and an uncle or something or other. She'd met his grandparents a few times before and they all adored her and always invited her on the yacht and to casino nights and to all their high class social gatherings. She let her gaze wander and took in Holly and Harvey and Gareth and Seth and a few of her other friends from the cuircut, smiling a touch at the thought that tomorrow they'd all be wishing the others horses would drop a leg over the oxer. She spotted Ryan and beamed at him, he was unusually unsocial- he would normally be chatting to everyone, handing out champagne and charming his mothers friends. • He offered her the best half hearted smile that he could muster, but it still wasn't it's usual luminance. He was really bothered by the letter from the school - he wasn't dumb by any means, but he failed to understand why some of this "practical theory" even applied to photography in the first place. He also knew that his father would withdraw his generosity - while they were wealthy, his father was always concious of Ryan "squandering money" on frivolous things. He finally rose, taking a flute of champagne from a nearby server's tray and thanked them before heading over to her and pressing a kiss to her cheek. "You look amazing." • She grinned at him gently as he came to her side and kissed her cheek, her bright eyes dancing over his, noting the trouble she saw in them but saying nothing, turning her attention back to his grandfather as he told her again how glad he was that 'young ryan' had found himself a 'nice girl' to take care of. She sipped at the pink champagne delicately, smiling at the men as they each dispersed off to see other guests, leaving ryan and lacey alone together. • It was imperative to him that she didn't know that he had failed because he was almost sure she would blame herself and he didn't want that to happen. He technically didn't need a career, he could go into the family business, but that wasn't what he wanted. It wasn't like this F would destroy his life, it was just that it would.. he wanted credit. • He nodded in agreement to her suggestion about staying home. "I probably just need to sleep for 24 hours straight." • She glanced up at him as if to make sure he really didn;t mind her going to talk to her friends, "You sure? Come find me before midnight okay?" She leant up and kissed him sweetly, giving him a small smile before heading over to the group, exchanging a few hugs and pecks on the cheek before getting thrown intot he very horsy conversation that was taking place. She got so carried away with it that she didn't even notice the time slip away, and she heard someone call out that it was just a minute till midnight when she and Harvey were discussing his mares recovery and what he'd be riding in the mean time. She stood up from where she'd been sat on the couch and glanced around for Ryan. The place was absolutely packed with people however, and the ten second countdown had already begun. • She felt her heart sink a little as she heard everyone shout happy new year and got caught up in a few hugs and pecks ont he cheeks from various people- most of whom she did not know. She told herself not to be so silly- it was just a silly tradition- it didn;t mean anything. She returned everyones smiles and accepted a second (and final) glass of champagne to see in the new year with, finally locating Ryans father and mother and exchanging heartfelt hugs with them both. • She frowned when she saw Lacey on her own when the clock struck midnight and was even more perplexed when the girl approached with her question. • Lacey frowned a little at that, she had assumed Ryan had been busy helping his mom with organising food and drinks and things for their guests- even though they had hired help to deal witht hat. "I havent seen him for about 2 hours or so... He said he had somehting to take care of... but I told him to find me before midnight..." She gave the room another scan as she stood on tiptoes. "I can't see him anywhere. I'm going to check his room..." She smiled at Eliza and headed in the direction of his room, however she found it empty, as were all the other bedrooms and bathrooms, so she returned to Eliza, shrugging her shoulders and shaking her head. • Her frown grew as well as her concern when Lacey reported back that she couldn't find him and no one at the party mentioned seeing him - it was unlike Ryan to have stiffed her like that, he clearly adored the girl and wouldn't miss an opportunity to make her feel special.. she wasn't sure whether to be worried or angry, and she took Lacey by the arm and aside. "I told security to keep an eye open for him, no big worries, but why don't you and I have a little peak around the property together and see if we can't find him. • She smiled at Eliza's positivity and nodded , arching a brow "Probably! I dont mind look on my own though... you should stay and enjoy the party." She tried, but she knew Eliza wouldnt hear of it. She followed her out the front of the house and had a good look around, they could do a whole loop around the house, and then even try down at the stables but she doubted he'd be down there. It wasn;t until they got around to the back of the house that she spotted him, tucked away in the private garden and the swing seat, a bottle in hand. • If he could have gotten up and run when he saw the two most influential women in his life heading toward him, he likely would have, but he was down to his last sip of champagne and his body was starting to feel pretty languid. • She couldn;t help the tear that formed in her pretty blue eyes at his rejection... it was so unlike him... and she was tougher than that. She swallowed a touch and sat down beside him, taking the bottle off him before he could opject and setting it on the floor beside the swing. "No you're not... you're just drunk... and you're going to freeze to death if you stay out here." She slipped her fingers into his and gave a gentle tug on his arm. "Sleep will help, come on..." • She looked at him almost exasberated as he pulled his hand from her, but listened to him, feeling her heart sink until it hit rock bottom with his final comment. She gazed at him a moment, unsure what to say, her gaze flickering quickly to Eliza before returning to him, but not meeting his gaze. "Quit arguing with me. We're taking you to bed." She mumbled, standing and being none too careful about hauling him up onto his feet "Can you help me?" She asked Eliza, breezing over his comments like he'd just told her he'd drank too much. She just couldnt deal witht them right now, infront of him and his mother, she dealt with things alone, quietly and calmly, bruising inside but not out. • She finally stepped forward and first put a hand on Lacey's shoulder, giving her a supportive squeeze before helping her lift Ryan to his feet, none too gently. She could have smacked her darling baby boy silly - not for the bit about school but the bit about Hailey.He continued to mope. "You don't deserve a jackass like me... you deserve someone who can treat you right and not break down under pressure." • She could feel the tears burn in her eyes and his words only made the desire to cry even stronger, but she held back, not lifting her gaze to either her boyfriend or his mother, just helping him to walk towards the back door where they could smuggle him into the house fairly inconspicuously. "Shut up Ryan." Was all she could murmer. She didn't ...couldn't... talk about this right now- not while he was drunk.. Not while his mother was there. They managed to half support, half carry him throught he back of the house and into his room, dropping him onto his bed where Lacey untied and pulled off his fancy dress shoes unceremoniously, blinking back the tears. • She stood over him at the foot of the bed, merely shaking her head, taking the pose that she had assumed outdoors while Ryan tossed in the bed, moaning and mumbling something about his unworthiness. "You have a lot of explaining to do to that girl, Ryan. I don't care how many classes you fail. She has been nothing but faithful and devoted to you." She didn't often use her 'stern voice' with him, but this was an exception. "You don't understand. I love her, mom, I would marry her today if I thought she would have me."   • It was a long time before he fell asleep, fitfully, painfully aware of her in the next room over and aching all through his body, including his heart. She paused outside of Lacey's door for a moment after she left Ryan's room, giving him a incredulous glance and closing the door - she figured it was best to let Lacey work things out on her own, until morning at least.
