Hi Marty,

Your water heater is probably roadside behind the bed. Look in the rear compartments behind the bed and see if one doesn’t have a bottom that can be lifted up. The water heater drain control will be around the bed, on the side of the bed on mine (air assist-I forget what its’ called, will help). Generally, the water tank itself is physically difficult work on w/o removing the surrounding structures.

In my experience, you don’t have to worry to much about loosing prime. If the filter assembly, seals mostly, are put back incorrectly, then you may encounter priming issues. So if your just going to crack the drain valve and let a bit out you should be fine; perhaps loosening the top screws too to aid in draining. If your unsure of the old filter, you might want to drain the filter housing, thoroughly clean and place a new filter and refill with clean diesel. Pay special attention to correctly replacing the small O-ring on the T-handle. Your Detroit engine does not have general priming issue like a 3208 can have. A tiny prime issue that will stop a 3208 from running well or even starting, will just result in a bit of initial white smoke on a V92.

I found that if I left the retarder ON from the previous trip (the on and off switch), this would sometimes result in hard starting; as if the batteries/starter is shot. Make sure its OFF. Take your time, walk around the bus and see that nothing is still attached. No alarms should be buzzing, make sure all cabinet doors and drawers are secure. No leaves on the roof right, they’ll be sucked into the intake, clog that to the point where it sucks flat, and you’ll be on the highway going about 5 mph…

Overall, be nosey. You know that the original rubber, hoses, grommets, insulators, etc., are now old and brittle and are all waiting to strand you. People have worked on you bus, some quite competent, others….morons. It is okay to remove covers and see if all is well. Peek in those J-boxes and see if you appliance wiring still look new or is the insulation falling off the wiring (like on my 1980BB heater wiring).
