Subject: Detroit 60 Series -vs- 8V92

Hello,

I’m curious to know how the Detroit 60 series with the 6 speed transmission compares to a 4 speed 8V92 performance wise. I would imagine that the 60 series being able to tune itself to the current driving environment (air pressure, temperature, engine speed etc.) plus two extra gears would allow it to feel as though it is always running at a sweat spot. Any comments from those who have tried both? How about cooling? A huge change, or are the newer busses simply too heavy to notice a marked change? And out of curiousity, how about fuel economy?

Thanks, Don

Don,
I put about 10 years each on a 475 HP 8V92 and a 500 HP Series 60. I noticed a little gain in power with the Series 60 but certainly not an overwhelming difference. There was a 1 mpg+ improvement in fuel economy with the Series 60. I now have an M450 with the 525HP Cat and, again, an improvement in power but a drop of nearly 1 mpg in economy. Not a good comparrison yet as I only put about 1500 miles on it so far.

Hi Rich,

I’d imagine each generation was heavier too w/perhaps one more gear. I guess there is only so much energy in a gallon of diesel. How do the busses compare as far as engine cooling on hot day, steep grade w/altitude etc.?

Thanks,

Don
