Subject: pre-purchase SP36

Hi. My name is Dale and I restore old motorhomes. I have an Aero Cruiser which is my jewel. I am currently restoring a FMC. When that is complete and gone, I would like to look for a SP36 (89-91).

My question is about how their drivability is. Since working with the FMC, I am paranoid about pusher units. The FMC is tail heavy with the Chrysler 440 and tends to drift all over the road. The cure is to keep the water tanks full(they are up front over the steering wheels.) This is impractical. Especially if you dry camp as we do.

I really would rather not have a tag axel and I would like a pusher, so I'm wondering is there are any inherant steering problems with the SP36.

Also I was suprised to find that the FMC only has a 2-way fridge, 12V and 120V. No propane. This also makes dry camping impossible unless I want to run the genny for extended periods. Are most BBirds 3-way or should I factor a fridge into the future purchase?

I am not sure why you don't like tags or the wandering problems. I have a 38' PT that doesn't wander, is very quiet and the ride doesn't change with or without water in the tanks. Knowing what I know now and after much study I am very please not to have bought a coach with an engine up front. Stick with your desire for a pusher and you can't go wrong. Good luck.

I just drove an 89 SP36 for a friend. He wanted to sit in the passenger seat and listen for any different noises, etc. The coach drove like a dream and we put about 75 miles on her with large hills and interstate travel. Has a lot of get up and go.
