Something kept troubling me about the mention of "Mack the Knife" and finally I woke up to what it was. We all know BC could probably do anything well with his wealth of talent and after becoming a "member" of this sight I also recognize that we are not solely limited to BC/GW in our tastes in music. So, at the risk of sounding sacreligious, here is the question. What one favorite song would you like to hear BC cover? Can't wait for some answers to this one.
LL.

He would do a great version of His Latest Flame by Elvis.

"Sitting in the moanin sun, I'll be sittin when the evening comes,
Watching the ships roll in and I watch'em roll away again,
ooo, I'm just a-sittin on the day of the bay,"

I think Burton could do soulful world-weary blues as good as anyone since the legendary Otis Redding.

I think this is an excellent suggestion. The one I like is one he's done before, on the '92 Variety Club Telethon, "On Every Street" by Dire Straits. But for one he hasn't done, I'd vote for "Without You" by Harry Nilsson.

"Without You" was originally done by one of my favorite alltime bands, Badfinger, so naturally, I like that choice VERY much.

Yes, an Xmas album would be a logical progression [!] for Burton's career.

One of my favorite country tunes is one called "Lord, This Time you Gave Me a Mountain", originally done by Marty Robbins. My friend Jack Daniels used to sing this one when he was in a band called SilverCreek - before he played for Burton. I've always wondered how Burton would do with this quite emotional ballad.

Umm... excellent choice and Marty's songs would be in a good range for BC (now that you've reminded me, I've got MR's version of this handy...)

Some others that I've been thinking of:

Always on my Mind (Willie Nelson) oh yeah, Elvis did this one too
Midnight Hour (Wilson Pickett)
AND
anything by Ray Price or Nat King Cole -- I love those smooth voices

Yes, and I would humbly make myself available to do a duo of "Unforgettable,".....yes.......

Moondance by Van Morrison. One of the best songs of all time and leaves Burton with a lot of chances for improv and making it his own song.

That's my 2nd choice. (it's probably still on the old board when this topic came up last time!)

Now that I've had a taste with "Daydream Believer," I'd love to hear a few more songs from those more innocent times get the Burton treatment. My choices: "More Today than Yesterday" by the Spiral Staircase, "Red Rubber Ball" by the Cyrkle and "Build Me up Buttercup" by the Foundations.

What about an album of covers? Maybe 15-20 of BC's favorites so as to pay homage to the music and artists that influenced him? Also, there's always room for a duets album!! How about a BC album trilogy: Covers, Duets, and Xmas??

Well, DOAC was 1/2 a cover album. In fact, between his first three, there would be an entire album's worth of covers right there.

Yeah, I'd bet Burton would do a great Red Rubber Ball.

Forget the covers. I want all new Burton originals. I wanna hear what Burton's musical muse is whispering in his ear. I need to be blown away by that brilliant songwriter we know he is.

Ultimately, I agree. Since he's been so "niggardly" with his output, certainly he has a humongus backlog of originals from which to choose a killer collection. But with his world-class, it's hard to want to hear the Voice covering all one's favorite tunes.

[> [> [> Re: A Burton Cover -- Roast Beef, 14:31:39 03/13/00 Mon [1] (cma.cma-oh.org/198.30.149.2)

Although this may sound sacrilegious to many Burton purists, I think "The Voice" needs a band to collaborate and play with. I think there's alot to be said for the back-and-forth interplay between like-minded musicians that can create some wonderful results. Certainly Burton would be the big brain leading the whole shebang but I really miss the sound of a rock and roll band behind Burton's piano and vocals. After all, look what happened with Carlos Santana when he rubbed shoulders with the young talent that has been influenced by his music. Incredible stuff. But of course I'm not in Burton's show biz shoes so these are all merely my own opinions and do not reflect the opinions or views of the management here on the Burton Cummings Fan Club.

Hey- everybody's entitled to their opinion. Burton was talking about getting a band together before the GW tour pushed that to the backburner. ( only for now I hope.) Me, I loved the UCAA shows because Burton interacted with his audience, saying hi to them onstage, joking with them kinda cool."Are you here again?" He does recognise people he sees show after show. He rocked with the Carpet Frogs in Winnipeg.

Another right answer. Considering I've not seen the man live (other than his cameo w/ Ringo's band when he absolutely stole the show with his 2 songs), I'd settle for the UC&A over nothing, but the high wattage thing always blew my hair back the most.

Sometimes I feel like I've got two fans tugging at my innards. The one has expressed his Burton feelings earlier and then there's another fan that is caught in a bubble of time. My favorite GW era were the Kurt Winter/Donnie McDougall years. God how I miss Kurt's songwriting and guitar work. And then there's Donnie's Canadian folk influences that have left an impression on me I'll probably never shake. Ah the ultimate ying-yang/black-white/yes-no struggles. My bipolar personality at work with my Guess Who/Burton yearnings. Train comin' too fast...

I think there was a huge amount of creativity with the Guess Who and I agree that there can be some synergy with the group rather than solo. Burton has said it is much harder to perform by yourself than with a band, I think the same can be said for the creative process of writing and developing the sound. Burton and Randy seem to really work well together writing songs.

I was listening to Johnny Rivers' "Baby, I Need Your Lovin" on the oldies station yesterday, and got to thinking how BC could really do well with any of Johnny Rivers' songs:
Memphis Tennesee, Tracks of My Tears, Secret Agent Man, Rocking Pneumonia, Baby I Need..., or my favorite, "Summer Rain".
"All summer long we spent groovin ['Groovin' by the Rascals--there's another good one] in the sand/ Everybody kept on playing Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."
Speaking of Sgt. Pepper & covers, JE's book mentions how TGW did a television performance w/ orchestra of the Beatle album in its entirity. Can anyone give us an eye/earwitness account of said performance?
Happy St. Patick's day to all, and don't forget to quaff alittle (or alot) of that green beer!!
