The UK road tax for my Jag is hefty (can't remember the exact amount) which makes me think I should drive it more than the 6,000 miles to get better value! There's the basis for a joke about Scottish frugality there. Spend a fortune on petrol to ensure you're getting your money's worth with the road tax.

What about television licences? It's 145 quid and fifty pence a year for a colour telly in the UK.

One British pound = 1.61 Australian dollars

One British pound = 1.59 Canadian dollars

Good grief! Australian and Canadian dollars are worth pretty much the same in pounds sterling.

I think the UK telly licence fee is reasonable value. It pays for the BBC, all the other channels get their money from advertising.

Tell me, good friends in far-flung places, can you watch BBC programmes on the BBC iPlayer website?

(Address: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/)

I'm curious to know if this is limited to UK users, though how that could be controlled I'm not sure.

When we lived in Belgium we got a form with a new telly or radio(!) that had to be sent off immediately to register for a licence, presumably followed-up with a demand for payment. We never received a bill during the two years we were there. I feel like such a rogue. Interpol will probably get me on my death bed.

BB
