Oh poo Humbug!!!!! She says, tongue in cheek. I've always been a royalist, but then the royal family had close ties to the school I went to, and indeed many of the children of the people who worked on the royal estate at Windsor Great Park went to the same school anyway, and David's best friend's father worked in the Park. I suppose if I lived thousands of miles away I might feel the same as you, but as it stands I would rather have a monarch than a president, especially someone like Blair or Brown, but having lived so closely for so long, and both my parents being suh ardent royalists, it has very much coloured my outlook. Each to their own, but of course even Oliver Cromwell considered being crowned king intead of just being Protector. I agree that there are far too many hangers-on and we should only be paying for the main line, but there again the crown gave over the income of the crown estates to the government way back when in exchange for a regular income, so the government has had far more back than has been paid out, butfrom what I was reading in the paper the other day, there are considerations being made of handing back the crown estates and letting the royals take their income from that, so the tax payer could lose out on millions if that happens.
