Subject: Help with Certification Test

My wife was tested and diagnosed with dyslexia as a child. She was in the special education classes and had an IEP all through school. We live in Maryland. After graduating highschool she went to the Baltimore School of Massage and graduated. However, she now has to pass her board certification tests in order to be a practicing massage therapist. The test involves most of the questions that would be on the board tests for nurses. Though she studies like crazy she has failed the test 4 times. She now has to go back and take 30 more hours of school before trying again at the tests. Each time she is only off by 30-60 points out of 300. I truly believe that the reason she is not passing has to do with her dislexia. We have no idea where to start in order to seek help for this. Can she get any assistance? The test is timed and that is a huge part of the failure. If she had time to finish all the questions, I really think she would be a certified massage therapist by now. This is her dream and she's so close to achieving it. I just want to help her take that last step over the finish line. She knows her stuff, she just struggles with the test. HELP!

I think there is a disability law that says students with dyslexia are able to have extra time when taking tests. Read up on disability law and dyslexia.

Your wife is a lucky woman to have a caring, encouraging husband. G-d bless you for emotionally supporting her and her desires. Tell her not to give up. With her determination, she will pass it. good luck.

She may need to "update" her paperwork, get re-tested, some insurance will pay for some of the testing. When I took the GRE's to get into graduate school, my IEP forms from school did not work since my testing was back in middle school. So many 100s dollars later I had my updated paper work and I got to take the test with double time. It made the world of differences. I first tried it with the normal time and my score what awful, I still applied to grad school thinking my grades and research experience would make up for the bad test score. I was wrong, no one wanted me, bad schools didn't even what me. I re-took the test with the added time, my math was almost perfect and my verbal was also really good (I did study a lot more but the time is what did it for me). With this being the only really change the following year I got into all the schools I applied, the best schools in the country/world. What I am trying to tell you is the extra effort (money/time) for her to have more time for testing is wroth every min of your time. And she needs your help in encouraging her to get the extra time and make sure feel like its not cheating. Good luck.

Hi, again. I found two articles on the web that would be of interest to you. "The law after high school" by Patricia H. Latham and "A Dyslexic law student's story"
The second one is on this website. I think your wife is protected under the ADA AM DIsabilities Act. Good luck

YES! It is a federal law that she receive testing assistance. All she needs is to contact the testing officials and give them proof of her disability. Yes, it is a disability and accommodations must be made under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Proof of her disability would include a copy of her last IEP or a physician's statement. We are in Oklahoma so I'm not sure about the state regulations. Contact the licensing board and they should be able to help. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me and I'll try to help further.
