About a week ago I posted a message asking for any feedback regarding Ronald Davis’s book “The Gift of Dyslexia” along with his workshops. I was very surprised that no one responded. I’m curious to know if anyone has ever heard of him or read the book or even attended a workshop of his? I’m really looking for some help here. I’m 27 yrs old and truly feel stuck at where I’m at in my life because I’m dyslexic. Please, any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,
Valerie

Hi I have read the book it was a good read but it didn’t help me much. I’m 55 and was diagnosed with dyslexia when I was in the first grade. I have read a lot of books on this subject over the years, and found that hardly any of them knew what they were talking about, and most of them were so off base that they hurt more people than they help.

The best thing I have found is just keep looking for what will help you where you are weak. My weakness is my spelling. So I look for anything that will help me, I use software that will correct my spelling, like Dragon Naturally Speaking, WordQ, and a new one out called Ginger. I haven’t seen anyone cured that has dyslexia, they only learn to cope with it. To me it's like a person missing a leg, they could get a prosthetic or they could keep stumbling around hoping that it will grow back.
So find out what helps you and go for it.

Yes, my daughter has gone through the Davis Learning system.
I would try no other method. This visual approach is just what is needed to help. Immediately, my daughter began to read better, and gets better every day.

Susie,
Thank you so much for responding to my posting. I’m looking at going through the program myself, but really wasn’t sure if it would be worth the money. The program is a little more on the expensive said, however if it works and can help improve my area’s of weakness I really can’t put a price on that!!
I did find some individual’s who are licensed for the Davis Learning system in my area but thank you so much for the referral I really appreciate it.

Yes, I have read a book Gift of Dyslexia by Ron Davis and it is great !
Gives a lot of explanation about LD , as well as a hope and believe that with appropriate therapy/learning it could be overcome .
I even call a Davis method facilitator here in Vancouver BC ,
had a very nice talk about whole approach/help.
I'm waiting yet for standard tests to be done ,
before I have make any decision which program/help to take .
Price of testing is about 2800 $ Can (privately)
same or similar as Davis method approach (price).
And I have a great hope in it, it sounds believable and logical to me ,
but first I have to learn if my darling child has dyslexia or not .

All the best , and again book is GREAT!

The book Gift of Dyslexia is a book and program many people rave about. I don't know much about that specific program, but I do know what definitely works:

What is called an "Otron-Gilllingham" program (there are about 10 out there). Dyslexia is largely based on a phonological processing deficit. it is easy to diagnose, and does not have to be really costly, depending on how many sub-tests you want, and whether or not you would like a written report.

I work with students on-line, through video conferencing, and can test your child in this way. Go to www.napareading.com to find out more!

Good luck to you!

If you read The Gift of Dyslexia and it touches a chord with you, then it is worth exploring further. The methods are very different from most others. They are very person-centred and build on the strengths of a visual-thinker.By understanding how the dyslexic thinks and how to self-manage your thought processes, it becomes possible to achieve many literacy goals.
You can work from the book which is why it has a sort of 'script' in the back, get a kit&manual from the www.dyslexia.com website or work with a licensed Facilitator.
My son did a programme and the results for him, and the effect on us as family, were so significant that I trained to become a Davis Facilitator!
