I have always had a spelling assistant in my life (husband and sister for example). Here are a few tips that have helped those helping me.
First if he asks you to spell a word, do not speak the letters to him (such as S-P-E-L-L), rather write the word out on a piece of paper and give it to him to copy out. For a dyslexic person, having lists of words in front of you does not help. Even if it is spelled correctly in front of me I may not copy it correctly. The best is to alow him to write and edit it for him later. Be careful not to patronise or expect a word to be spelled correctly if you have corrected it in the past.
Thanks for careing enouph about your friend to help!
regards
Nicole (Oh and please check the spelling:) ha ha)

I work for an English Enrichment software which corrects spelling, grammar, punctuation in whole sentences,( as opposed to word by word).
The software is www.whitesmoke.com.
In approximately one month, we will be selling our software designed specially to help the dyslectics. www.whitesmoke.com/writing assistant.
At present one can go into the sight and try out the new software that we are developing. One can type and check out the corrections given. It may not be 100% at present, but in no time it will be the dyslectics best friend.
Please update me when you have tried it.

damefrank

email me after you check out the site www.gabbyswordspeller.com. I'll give you a discount on the world's only, new Phonetic Dictionary and wordspeller. It's my book and I would love for you to get it to who needs it. My daughter is dyslexic and didn't make it through high school because of writing and spelling, which is why I spent 12 years creating it. You could try the library first and see if they have one, request it if you need it...it's in the national system and they may be able to acquire it! All's good!

Hi Aimee! Here's something low-tech that might help.

First get your friend to e-mail (or dictate)one sentence.

Now take that sentence, make the spelling corrections, and change the font to HUGE letters. Print it out and tape it up on the wall on the left side of his bed or kitchen table or computer - wherever he/she spends a lot of time. Maybe in each of these locations. Always to the left and a little higher than eye level.

With kids we use different colours of paper as we add new sentences.

This is called using "visual imprint" to help the person to remember. It works for some people, so it may be worth a try. And it's CHEAP!
