A very good friend of mine is currently being pushed through the disciplinary process at his work, he is obviously severely
dyslexic and suffers from most of the problems listed on many dyslexia websites. he used to have extra help at school but has never been diagnosed dyslexic. his employer will not except his disability and has requested that he needs to provide a written report from an expert. His GP has been useless and will not refer him to a psychologist. Can anybody suggest his next avenue of help. he lives in south devon.

sorry if this sounds blunt: sending your friend to a shrink will do no good, however a nero-opthamologist (one who knows about the brain and vision is just the ticket)this will involve a battery of tests,viewing the way his writing is done and his overall perception of the world around him.try this little trick, with a felt tip marker in block print write his name down on paper that will allow the ink to bleed through it, then flip the paper over, ask him if the text appears normal to him,if it does then he has strephosymbolia / Dyslexia, this is the true test of a mirror image reader, it`s not a curse, in many cultures it`s considered a gift of god. paschar(vision)

Hello, first of all I think you are a VERY good friend for helping out. You might want to have your friend go to the Local JR College in your town for learning disability (dyslexia) evacuation and assessment. I am in Californian and in this state there is no charge for the assessment you just have to be a student (part time student is ok, there are classes that are only .5 unites).

I have been diagnosed with a LD since grade school. It is a �daily battle� to live with and I would not wish this on any one, but it is what it is and if you want to prosper it is important to know what accommodation there are and to use them, such as a spell check on a computer, and other software.

By law, an employee MUST provide �reasonable accommodation� if they like it or not. I have had supervisors that did not want to be �burden� by assisting me, so I can understand the frustration that it sounds like he/she is dealing with. There are some people in �management� that are uneducated about LD�s and that do not care about it. He might also want to look at an attorney, if his employer is not willing at provide him with these accommodation. All in all, he/she has to fight for what is right and have to know what he/she is entitled to and not let anyone tell me/her they cannot be successful!

Isn't what your friend is experiencing "discrimination in the workplace". If he isn't a member of a union I recommend he joins one straight away.
Has he contacted any help groups in Devon? type in - dyslexia association in devon - into Google and there are lots of dyslexia sites and I feel sure someone could give support or advice.
Has he contacted the Citizens Advice Bureau? If they can't help they could possible put him in touch with someone can help.

I suggest you friend goes to their local Job Centre Plus and askes about Access to work who will either pay for it and sort out being tested.
