Being the "son of a preacher man" I would like to refute the above claim. Historically, some of the best tithing ever was during the great depression. See...the thing that generates money for churches is fear. I remember the sermons shifting toward the fear tactics when church money started getting tight. When people start being afraid, they start going to church. Everytime a war breaks out, attendance goes up in churches...and ironically, so does tithing. Point being...an increase in tithing is not necessarily a reflection of the economy...more likely, it is a reflection of an increase in the fear factor.
