I thought I might reply to the music topic, but it looks a bit played out by now, as it were. ;)

Glad to see many of the regulars here are still here! I hope everyone is doing well. Looks like you're getting married, conratulations Mark. =)

As long as I'm starting a new thread, I have several topics I wouldn't mind some feedback on. But I will pick just one.

Let's see. I am constantly troubled by affirmative action in the US in general, but more specifically of late with regard to university admissions. The idea that schools can usher in minorities not based on their work but on their skin color seems just as biased as refusing to let someone into a school for the same reason.

Of course the Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of affirmative action, validating the use of race as a factor for admissions in the name of diversity and equality. I am not convinced, but I'm not completely opposed. I am somewhere on the fence, which is perhaps why I'd like some other viewpoints to bounce mine up against.

I can certainly see the need for some kind of action. I can see that there is not equality in practice with regards to race relations in the States. I'm just not sure that fighting fire with fire.. or fighting society's prejudice with more prejudice.. is a good idea.

It's a Band-Aid measure at best, but it's not helping to heal. As far as the Band-Aid analogy goes, it's more like a dirty bandage over the wound that simply masks the problem as it infects the wound. But is it an accurate analogy? Or does affirmative action work?

More importantly, what are other solutions? It seems to me that improving the quality of education in urban areas where there is often a large representation of minorities would naturally increase the chances for said minorities to get into colleges and universities on their own merits.

But that only sounds good if you say it fast. That takes years to show real results even after the changes are in effect, and the changes themselves take years to implement. In many cases, if the ball is even rolling in the right direction it's only creeping along. And where does the money come from? Ever an issue, of course.

Anyway, good to see you so many of you still here. I'm not sure how active the boards are at this point, but any comments would be appreciated.
