Polo grooming -- Julia Smith, 15:09:38 03/10/05 Thu (195.92.168.177)
Hi, I have just returned from spending 6 months in new Zealand and am looking for some work as a polo groom. I am 28 years old and live on the wrong side of the scottish borders (i'm just english!!)! I was a member of the percy pony club when young enough and represented all teams. I have also spent 5 summers teaching horse riding on a summer camp in the USA and have run my own hunter livery yard in the winters in Northumberland. Having just spent some time at Mystery Creek in New Zealand with the Clarkin's and family i would love to carry on with polo grooming over here.
I was hoping that if somebody knew of someone needing a groom that is very hard working and enjoys a good time also then perhaps they could get in touch. If anyone is interested then please e mail me on julessmith_26@hotmail.com or call me on 07971522887. Thank you very much and hope everyone has a great season.

Hi guys
I really need some help, i am a HND student trying to write my dissertation but i need some help. I am looking into common injuries in polo ponies but i have come to a dead end. I have sent out a questionnaire to some players and had a response but i need some more help. Do any of you have ponies that have been injured or know where i can get some information? I am not looking at this from a cruelty point of veiw, i am genuinely interested in polo and enjoy learning about it. I have found out about the injuries to riders but nothing on injuries to the ponies.
Thank you for any help you can give me

Re: Help needed -- Kenny MacDonald, 19:44:54 02/23/05 Wed (81.156.131.121)
Hi Nicola
our ponies are of the metal kind . Our commonest problem is a buckled wheel. Usually repaired by jumping on it or bending it on your knee ( not recommended on ponies !!!!)
Although we have the odd snapped chain and stripped sprocket.
And one of our heavier players managed to snap a bottom bracket spindle a couple of weeks ago !!!!

Bike polo team play in France -- Kenny MacDonald, 19:08:16 09/30/04 Thu (81.156.129.163)
A squad of five fine young ( middle aged) men represented Scotland in the Autumn cup tournament in Le Havre during the September weekend. This was our first International game since adopting the new International rules. Unfortunately the french have a different set of rules. Their game is a mixture of hurling and polo and is played with a handball?
Confused we certainly were !!! It was virtually impossible for us to hit the ball any distance with our equestrian mallets , plus everytime we got near the goals they ran into us from behind . The harder they knocked us off the quicker we got back up. We suffered defeat in all but one game 3-1 , 5-4 , 3-3 , 5-0. The draw was against last years French champions & contained half of the French team which got silver in World champs this year , so a morale victory. The 5-0 defeat was final game where we were down to 3 fit players due to illness & injury. We will seek revenge next year when the French will play in Scotland under international rules. We were the first non French team to play in a French rules tournament & were treated very well by all concerned. An excellent if not somewhat bruising experience.

Daily Mail (UK Paper) flew over to cover the story, should be in print in the next few days, (thanks to Duncan Gardham, great journalist!!) Pat is Reported to be working now in the north of Mallorca (Alcudia area) but who knows. When confronted by the reporter his biggest fear was that if the story went to press, his family would find out exactly who he was & waht he does for a living. Things get worse--- he wrote a cheque for ten thousand (euros or dollars) to sponsor an 18 yr old to cross the Atlantic solo here in Mallorca at the Royal Yatch Club. Imagine the poor guy's reaction when he found out it was a con to gain confidence, after numerous TV/Press & radio interviews to say he had the money. There's more but the best thing is to read the article in the next few days or so in the Daily Mail.

We have 17 bikes in our stable at present & hope to rescue some retired bikes from Ireland soon. Heading off to Le Havre in September to take part in International tournament. Interested ? let me know and we can arrange a game . I can arrange to bring bikes for a training session if you wish ( minimum 4 players)as long as you cover expenses.

Having watched faking it last night CH4 I suspect you will be the first of a batch of newcomers. If you cant find a horse polo club , come and try bike polo.

Poppy abandoned and Simon -- Sharon Packer, 08:42:10 01/21/04 Wed (213.122.44.14)
Thank you for your reply. You seem to have missed the most important point. - Poppy - Yes Simon made a tremendous effort - but Poppy helped him and together we all worked for 3 years to enable him to fulfil his dream.
I acknowledge that your organisation did help him on his way for a small part of the journey - but in the end Mr MacDonald-Wagstaffe forgot the most important thing - as did you - Poppy! - she was the one who was left in Scotland on her own - discarded once Simon had fulfilled his dream.
There could have been a happy ending, as you say , Simon apparently raised money for various charities on the way, and we should have been able to celebrate both his and Poppy's return.
Unfortunately in the end Poppy was just another animal - used to achieve some personal goal - and then forgotten.
That is ultimately why I am upset by this whole thing. ..and as for libelous statements ... it's only libel if it's not true.

Simon King and Poppy (your front page) -- Sharon Packer, 06:36:41 01/09/04 Fri (81.135.48.81)
I noticed with shock that you still had information regarding Simon King's journey from LandsEnd to John O'Groats on your front page.
Why with shock? - because I am Poppy's owner. I let Simon take Poppy on the trip on the basis that he would look after her and bring her back safely - and a Mr MacDonald-Wagstaffe - who I assume is something to do with this site offerred to arrange transport for Poppy once she had arrived at her destination. The day Simon and Poppy arrived Simon (1st September) Simon left Poppy in a field in Scotland and travelled back to England(Crawley) by train. - which I thought most strange at the time - but there we are...
He paid no livery and simply asked the land owner if she could stay a few days while waiting transport back to England. After two days I finally received contact details from Simon for the person who was bringing Poppy back to me. He was a Mr MacDonald-Wagstaffe. I rang him and in 10 days spoke to him twice about the arrangements. Each time Mr MacDonald-Wagstaffe said Poppy was well and he woud ring me back - he didn't. He also gave me the distinct impression that he actually had Poppy. - and bearing in mind I hadn't a clue where she was I simply accepted that was the case.
Then I received a phone call from Mr MacDonald-Wagstaffe's mother who said that as far as she was concerned she rued the day she ever gave a bucket of water to Poppy and Poppy had been abondoned and I would never see her again. When I rang back again Mr MacDonald-Wagstaffe put the phone down as soon as he heard my voice.
I did speak to his mother again and all I could make out is she took offence to my posting a notice on this very site asking if anyone knew the whereabouts of Poppy - this was done just after Poppy had finished her journey and I was extremely worried about her as I had no contact details and Simon had left her. She also said I had been on the phone all the time about Poppy and she was sick of it - but in fact I had only rung twice.- but that's by the way....
Anyway - once this happened I was motified - I actually thought they had Poppy and that they were goin gto dump her! I had to get the police involved to find Poppy and was amazed later to find out that Mr MacDonald-Wagstaffe lived nowhere near where Poppy had been found. (Near John O'Groates') I also had to pay a transport company to bring Poppy back to me. The lady who had let Poppy stay in her field said that no-one had contacted at all about Poppy - not even to find out how she was until I had. - which was some ten days after her arrival in her field. - Simon did ring her later as I had left her phone number on Simon's message service - but not to ask about Poppy - to make sure that I was not collecting the cart as well!
When Poppy arrived back the insides of her back legs were covered in sores from the sweat which had never been whiped away from the last day of her journey.
Poor Poppy - it was 3 weeks from the day she arrived in the north of Scotland to the day she came back. She must have fretted every day wsiting for Simon to return - but he didn't and to this day despite being only a few yards from Simons house - he has not to my knowledge ever visited her. I tried to be civil to Simon and left messages asking him to ring me and said hi when I passed him when I was out in the cart - but nothing. He had obviously used me and Poppy for 3 years to enable him to fulfil his dream and then discarded us.
Yes I am upset - more so because he passed my house just the other day , galloping past down the road on someone elses pony. When I stopped the owner and asked how she could let Simon ride her pony after what she had done she told me that Simon had told her he had paid for Poppy's livery in Scotland, and her transport and she had returned and been sent out to livery somewhere else.
As for Mr MacDonald-Wagstaffe and his mother - they obviously don't think much of ponies judging by their actions. ...
Maybe Mr MacDonald-Wagstaffe could give me a nice Christian explanation as to his actions and why he still has Poppy and Simons story on the front page of this site when he knows full well that it didn't have a very happy ending.
Oh and the reason why I've suddenly decide to post this is Simon's getting cheeky and has got one of his friends to email me saying "Saw Simon King the other day, great guy, and a good friend of mine.Shame about the situation you caused over getting poppy back" - that about took the biscuit. If Simon now wants to try to blame me for the situation I will fight back!
Shame on you Mr MacDonald-Wagstaffe

Re: Simon King and Poppy (your front page) -- Scottish Polo Editorial Team, 14:58:45 01/20/04 Tue (213.78.120.183)
How one is castigated when providing free care for strangers’ people or animals!!
The missive above talks of spite and deliberate malice, yet Scot-polo provided free succor for both animals and traveler, giving freely of water grazing and all requirements as requested by Simon King whilst on his travels past us in Lanarkshire.
We then used our network of friends throughout Scotland to keep a watchful eye on their travels as did many others throughout the UK.
We did the same for a lady from Hexham who also walked on her travels with pony and dog piglet from Hexham up through the highlands and back in 2002
.
Simon King walked with Pony Poppy, Dog Prue and Ferret La-La, from Lands-end to John o Groats No mean Feat Eh!! Collecting moneys for, and Promoting charities including the Riding for the Disabled (RDA). Each of those organizations both approved and welcomed his initiative.
Quite rightly we at Scottish Polo did our bit in Scotland to boost the funds by advertising their efforts, and alerting local press, and we make it very clear at no gain to our-selves.
The above dissertation demeans their efforts over the four-month journey, and the whole effort made by both man, animals, and associates.
We rightly continue to bring the project to the public eye, since it took a lot of planning help and courage from all parties more especially since Simon King apparently new nothing of horses 'till 2000 and of course there are still those charities hopefully benefiting from the continued publication and publicity.
If Sharon Packer has a personal problem with Simon King regarding Poppy it seems somewhat silly to advertise it on the chat page there by demeaning all the efforts of man and beast.
As to the libelous statements made against the MacDonald-Wagstaffe's; incidentally they are actually both competent and experienced equestrian operators, in teaching, eventing, dressage, show-jumping and polo, of many years standing, we are sure they will access their rights to remedy the matter in the courts.

Hey,
How are we all getting on? I'm currently at the british racing school doing my foundation modern apprencticeship. I get to ride out every day and muck out and normal routine work.
Havn't been on the net for a long time, so I have some time now and decided to write a quick message. theres a lot of messages on the site which is good so heollo to you all.
Well I havn't been doing much and seem to be on holiday camp rather than anything else because inglesham was very busy and nonstop compared to being here, it's a doddle.
I been cantering on the rounds today but didn't go out on the rounds, but in the school becasue of too much rain and it wasn't fair on us being the last day.
After we finish our work at 5pm, we then have P.E for a hour, by running a mile and then doing circuits (weights, star jumps and sit ups and things like that). We then have to clean the hostel by sweeping and mopping the floors. On other nights we have NVQ ehich is assesments and tests about what we are doing.
The team is well and I get on allright with most of them although some are not the best people.
What have you been doing?
Hope you got home safely and mark was working today, well i'll go and see what other messages are on the other web chat pages. Just finished my computing so writing to you, a whole 12 pages of working out distances and milage, typing letters to people and making graphs of race meetings.
take care and love you,
Nicky

Those Argy ponies used to be quite above us all but the Road show has really brought us all together.
Well we have had some time off and now we're ready to start the Winter series,
we've lots planned so come and play Areana is just as good as grass play only there are only three of us playing on each side.
see you there don't forgett to come and see us all.

Hunting -- Upset Person!!, 22:36:59 05/19/02 Sun (62.7.3.32)
Hi to all that read this site,
Why oh why do we need to take off those who enjoy them selves the fun and pest control that has prevailed for countless years. Other sports that seem to deliberatly go out to trouble many are encouraged and financed, but ours is financed by those who do not know to the detrement of their own eventual liberties.
What then will be nextn fishing racing boxing perhaps those them selves that are so determined to ban all that is good. We are in danger as a people to accepts failure in the guise of success and then kid uselves on that we are right. So many wars have been faught to keep this great country of ours free and yet here we are pandering to the Europeans that are about to eventually defeat us where countless generations of intruders have been beaten off.
Think about it plesae all is not yet lost

Pony Club Polo Teams -- Nicky, 10:36:23 03/03/02 Sun (62.7.110.102)
Hi,
I was reading the new BHS Scottish directory and under the Polo section on Page 43, that there were two Pony Club Teams that toured in the South in 2001.
That is actually incorrect because my club Lanark & Upperward Area 19 took two teams. A Rendell and a Loriner team. So there were actually four teams that toured in the South, as Scotland also had two teams made up of various pony club players from Orkney to Kelso.
If there are any out there in Area 19 that are looking to play then please write and we will be delighted to talk with you as this year we were hoping to take more teams and an Area 19 team would be great!!!.
Last year all four teams qualified for Cowdray after the three prelim tournaments and we won the Rendel shield at Cirencester and the Loriner Shield at Tidworth and played the Scottish yeams at both levels.
So come on and join us we have some great traing days planned for area 19 different from those advertsed at Perth & Dundee in Area 1.
Write back all you over aged games players at 14 you are still in Loriner. See the <A rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://www.scotpolo.org.uk/_scotpolo/2002.html">"2002 Training Page</A>

Dengie National Finals -- Editor, 07:10:57 02/24/02 Sun
Hi to you all!!
What a great Dengie Area final we had at Rowallan yesterday Saturday 23rd February. What a day to travel. Typical Scottish weather with the snow lashing down most people turned up that were successful in the early rounds, in spite of the weather.
A great course was ready in the main arena for the final with ten skilfully placed jumps including a double and a treble. The track stretched the 27 entries to the full, which was expected of Rowallan and well worthy of the Scottish Area 19 Dengie second round competition.
After the first round there were just 11 clears. Just the right amount to go on to the tricky jump off. There were a few chances to clip the seconds off but for most riders the speed of the track was enough.
Clear rounds were few and far between, and with the tenth rider Nichola Wagstaffe riding Lady Sanchez representing Lanark and Upperward to jump there were only three clear rounds and only four to qualify.
Nichola finished her round clear bidding for the 4th qualifying position but would it be fast enough at 38.6secs to keep the last Eglinton rider out of the ribbons.
The last rider was clear over the first two fences but lost her concentration at the third fence a large oxer spread didn't take off in time and demolished the fence.
A great sigh of relief in the Lanark and Upperwood camp. Nichola having represented her club at the Cowdray Polo Championships for that last two years the only Pony Club from Area 19, was delighted to be given the chance to jump for her club at Warwickshire College at the National Dengie Winter League Final, with two friends from Lanark and Renfrew James Spy from Colgrain Equation Centre Cardross Helensburgh who came second and Erin Maconochie also from Helesburgh who came third.
Thanks to Rowallan who again hosted a great competition and the three rosettes we well recieved and appreciated by the winners.
Well done to all competitors
Kindest Regards
The Editor.

Hunting -- Rhys, 21:43:06 02/08/02 Fri (62.7.50.45)
Hi,
What makes us be what and who we are. How do we change over the years or do we at all. Is it that we become known by those close to us that they do no longer see our little
idiosyncrasies/foibles, yet others do but out of manners do not comment.
One can be a multi-millionaire but with no credit history cannot get a credit card.
A female child can legally give birth at the age of 16yrs, but cannot have a cheque book, vote or drink in a pub.
A crazy world may be but here we are, with the geatest poverty the country has ever known. Agricultural business in the UK has been ruined by Systematic putting to death of animals in the name of "Foot and Mouth" or was it. It is a fact that the UK has been told to reduce live stock by 50% and yes it has been achieved. What now for any buisness.
What do you think
Rhys

Greetings my Friend -- Nicky, 22:36:57 02/03/02 Sun (62.7.125.43)
Hey Toe,
How are you? Have you been riding recently? I haven't, i've been working at school work. I'm doing my prelims for my highers so revising to do still they are over next week and the real ones are in May so not far away. I've have been working in a yard on the weekends so that is why I haven't been over to see you guys.I think that i may have an invite to America to play polo in the summer from someone that i met last year at Cirencester park so need to earn some pennies for pocket money!!!!!!. Have you been to Ammerica? if so what did you see? and did the flying make your arms tired?????? Hows bonny getting on?.
Oh before i forget get a look at ww.scotponyclubpolo.org.uk site and leave us a message to know that you have been there!!?1/****. It is still being built but we are getting there Dad and I that is!!!.What do you think the {comp} page should include for you guys, and as i do a lot of the research, i shall need to research and we can get it on the site including links to the centres if they are on line and then that means one click and its all there.
Well what about you? How's Mac?
Well write back,
take care,
nichola

Happy New Equestrian Year -- Editor, 19:59:03 01/02/02 Wed (213.1.60.53)
Hey Every one it's 2002
A happy new year to all our readers.
We have tried to make the site informative for all, but if we have missed your interest, then what are you waiting for, let us know either in this forum or E-mail the Webhelpers and we shall try to oblige!!.
<P align=centre><IMG alt= Come-on-Ali-do-Keep-up) border=0 height=100 src="C:/E-mails/clipart/afelix.gif" width=230></P>
Now let me think!!. If you haven't played polo it is worth a try, its a fun game and employs all the aids of equestrian sport. Its simply dressage with a polo stick.
Galloping along at 35mph and hitting a ball then turning up to take the ball to goal is exciting since control of the horse/pony is critical.
<embed src="C:/E-mails/music_files/Prelu#3.mid" width=100 height 100 autoplay=true hidden=true loop=false volume=60>
I have found that many of those playing polo are invariable great showjumpers or one day eventers and come to the sport with intrepidation, but find it great fun game and continue.
The great difference between polo and showjumping or dressage is the people that you meet are from vastly different backrounds and since there are four to a team there is quite often a party.
best wishes
