I watched the Gran Prix at Monaco this morning as the first of the racing trifecta for memorial day. I saw the 500 later and I am watching Charlotte as I write this. Today made the 16th year in a row that the pole sitter won the race. There were only a few passes for position made on the track. F1 changes the rules each year and this time Mercedes found a loophole and will probably win all the races unless someone else discovers the trick. The announcers were crowing the excellence of the Merc drivers, but these same drivers were finishing 3rd or worse for the last 4 years when Red Bull had the trick. I love auto racing and play Gran Turismo a lot, but F1 is not very interesting. I can appreciate the skill required of the drivers, but the tracks need to be widened and allow more places for a faster car to pass.

Now I take an almost opposite view, I am not that excited by racing on ovals.
Monaco is a unique race. If it didn't have it's history it wouldn't be considered for the calender these days. So the skill is being able to average 100mph and not hit the barriers. And if you don't think F1 is exciting then I guess you missed the Bahrain race earlier this year,

or the 2011 Canadian race, to name a couple.

F1 these days is about the technology. The new engines, or more precisely the hybrid power units, give more output than last years engines and use 30% less fuel.

I concede the skill set is pretty intense for a F1 driver. Don't discount that required for oval tracks though. Juan Pablo Montoya won in F1 and in Indy car, but never won on an oval in NASCAR. His car was good enough, the rookie who took it over has come closer this year than Juan ever did. I love the ebb and flow of a long oval race, and the excitement of the final pass for the lead is always fun. The Indy 500 this year had half a dozen passes for the lead the last few laps. That was pure excitement.

F1 is all about the tech. I remember when they used to put a wooden board under the bottom of the car and if too much of it was worn away at the end of the race the team was disqualified. The way they do it means that each year one team or another has an advantage the others can't really compete with. That loses my interest almost as much as the follow-the-leader type of races.
