What a sad chapter! Maybe the saddest that Wes has written. I've read this book multiple times and it hits me hard each time even though I knew what was going to happen when I started reading it again. It's a testimony to Wes' ability to create such compelling characters. Wes told me in an email that it was difficult for him to finish this book.

Same here. In fact there seems to be something in my eye. Well done, Wes.

It's also possibly one of the best chapters Wes has written.

I agree BUT it is also the least "Wes Boyd" chapters he has written. Wes does not normally do "sad" for a main character like Matt. Yes characters have died before like Julie Patterson & Brent Clarke but neither of those were main characters who's life Wes is so good at wrapping us up in. I don't think I could cope if he starts doing regularly.

I get the e-book download as soon as Wes releases it, so I have had 9 weeks to consider this. It took me 3 weeks to start rereading the book, normally I do that within 24 hours of finishing the first read, not this time. I only did the third read as Wes posted the chapters, I still cried as I read Chapter 26. Thank god chapter 27 gives us a ray of hope to end on!

Mr Boyd! We better hear more of Mary & Mattie (and the rest of the WH gang) and soon or I think you will have a lot of disgruntled readers on your hands!

Still when all is said and done another GREAT book from Wes!

Oh, yes, there's more to come. Two finished books and another one still mentally coming together.

Ditto for me. I had to read it two or three times and each time there were tears in my eyes, as there was just now when I read the final chapter.
I always thought that "Growing together" and "Picking up the pieces" were my two favourite Wes books but now I'm not sure. I think this one is right up there (along with Winchester Harbor, by the way).
The other thing I've really enjoyed is, from the other side of the planet, looking up Google Earth to see where the characters are or are heading. Not real easy with Blanche Tickle (!) itself but the rest, well, they add real meaning.
Thank you, Wes - I always look forward to lunchtime Monday, Wednesday and Friday 'cos that's when the latest chapters appear here in Sydney Australia (as distinct from Sydney, Nova Scotia!).

A kindred spirit in my home town! Wow. Ross it was like you were describing me complete to favorite stories, Google maps and the Monday, Wednesday & Friday vigils!
When looking at the maps of Newfoundland's South Shore did you notice the ferry routes and follow them on the Newfoundland Labrador Provincial Ferries site? That will bring home to you just how isolated, remote & uninhabited the South Shore is, even by Aussie standards.

Gday mate!

I should also have included Rocinante - one of the first I read and I've read it again twice since!
Yeah, did follow the ferry routes etc etc and also looked at the isolation of airports - particulary Gander - never realised how way out in the sticks that was to become an international stopover.
PS - where are you - I'm on the northern beaches.

Yes Gander is out in the sticks, but have a look at Goose Bay!!! It was also a major trans Atlantic airport back in the day.

I'm live right at Spit Junction, the cheap end of Mosman!

This is by far the best story you have written since the first one. I have skimmed through your other stories but not this one, I have read each chapter several times.and this story was wonderful.

just wanted to add my praise too to Wes for this one. Sad, but life's like that. And excellently written.

Wes,
Is it just a coincidence that two of the three people who died with leukemia in your stories have the surname Caldwell (The other one being Diane Caldwell who was mentioned as one of the departed friends in the 10th aniversary of the class of 1988?)

Hmmm -- never even thought of it until you pointed it out.
