I was on the Uganda in March 1979 with fellow pupils from Redstone secondary school in Redhill Sy. We joined the ship in Malta after flying from Gatwick on a Dan air comet. The first port of call was a Greek Island, can't remember the name and then onto Egypt where we visited Cairo and then the Pyraminds. The cruise was cut short by the ship running aground in the early hours of the morning as we departed Alexandria, I remember being woken by the ship shaking. Instead of returning to port the ship sailed across the med to Pireus as that was the nearest dry dock, I seem to remember that this part of the trip took two days. By the time we reached port the ship was listing - the explanation given was that we were short on drinking water? Anyhow once disembarked we spent the second week of the holiday staying in a Greek hotel with coach trips out to places such Adelphi, Athens and Sparta. I also recall that we then got a refund of the holiday cost once we returned home.
