This season's problems have clearly been caused by the reduction in time available for training casued by the weekly game of musical chairs for selection.

We are more than twenty games into the season and Ian smith still does not know what his best side or even best combinations are !!
It beggars belief

Harley I share your despair, squad rotation is an option to protect players from injury and mix in/ out of form players, surely now we are in a do or die situation our finest XV should be selected for as long as is possible. Think Smith and Maggs have done very little with the squad they have assembled this season, our situation shows that. On paper we are a top 8 team. I'll stick my kneck out and suggest Smith hasn't been fired because it would cost the club contractual money they don't have. As a club we still sit on a pile of cash from the Reddings sale, and I applaud the Directors for not raiding that too heftily from what we are told, although some must have hemorrhaged as gates and sponsorship are pretty poor. Prove me wrong Smithy, but i think your heart has gone out of the club and you have an option around the corner.

We are playing the team in relegation Pool with best and fastest set of backs. They have twice already scored at least 5 tries per game by going round our midfield just like Hunt said. So what does Maggs select? 2 no. 12's and our slowest centres to cover that midfield, Ollie (a non-wing)on one wing and our 3rd no. 14 in 3 games and a chap who has not played since we got drubbed at Wuss!!! The achieve nothing fly half still plays at 10. If I was Carter I would not be sleeping tonight.

I’m not sure I share the views of others here, but I’m very happy with this side. Compare it to the side that thrashed Bees in January and it’s good to see Ben Pons in at 7, with Chris Bishay returning on the wing. Dai Bishop is a proven quality Centre and when partnered with Andy Reay on Saturday looked a good combination. Bevon Armitage took some heavy hits on Saturday so maybe is not quite match-fit for the duration? I agree Ollie Thomas is no winger, but he doesn’t lack the gas does he? His boot alone justifies a place in the side, and I noticed on Saturday him dropping into 10, to mix-up first receiver.

I see that Nathan Bressington has been dropped from the squad altogether – a shame I think as he scored two good tries on Saturday, but can see how his howler could be a hammer-blow to his confidence after only just returning to the matchday squad.

Bench looks good with options in the backs. Barring injury, not sure this isn’t our best XV? It might not be all squad rotation – perhaps there are knocks to some members of the team?

There's no criticsim of the players here - they can only take the opportunities they are given and playing once every 3-4 weeks does nothing for match sharpness, fitness or confidence.
Bishop is undoubtedly a proven quality player but what chance has he had to build a playing relationship with his centre partner? Likewise Bishay - I agree with comments above that he's looked a sharp finisher but what chance has he had to learn other players' running lines and little quirks? These things come from game time and no ammount of training drills can replicate what happens in a live match environment.
And then there's Ollie - does he lack the gas? Yes. He is a sublime broken field runner but lacks the raw pace to take his oppo on the outside which is a basic requirement for wing play at any level. I also have noticed him dropping in to first receiver and he has done so effectively so why waste his talent on the wing when Davies has had, at best, an inconsistent season at fly half. Given the musical chairs elsewhere in the back line it seems frankly baffling that Ollie, who is arguable the best all round footballer at the club, has not been given an opportunity in his preferred position.
Looking at the squad man by man there are players in every position who would make it in to top 8 teams in this competition so the question remains as to why we are struggling in the relegation play-offs? Strong teams are built round strong settled combinations and while injuries will always cause some disruption the apparent failure to settle on preferred combinations by this point in the season is not accpetable. Perhaps this season Smithy has had too much choice having got used to managing a smaller squad supplemented by DRs from Glous when they were made available.

I presume it is Maggs who selects the backs to play in games and this is where most changes are always made. The pack has been pretty consistently selected over the season in my opinion. At the end of the day though, Smith is the head coach and the buck stops with him. Gosh I just don't know what will happen to the club if we go down, just look at teams like Waterloo, Rugby, Newbury etc. It does not bear thinking about. it took a huge effort last time with a good squad of players to get us back up again.
