Subject: Miss World Canada new direction?

I came upon the new Miss World Canada site and have to say I was very unimpressed. The site itself appears to be low quality and upon further inspection the pageant seems to be taking a new and strange route, one which I think is a little tacky and taking MWC in an unfortunate direction.

Girls have to pay for all of their own personal expenses, i.e. hotel and meals, and they have to pay to enter the talent, costume, and swimsuit competitions? But don't worry because they will receive a free seminar in scrapbooking. And don't get me started on the grammar and other discrepancies in their online documents, yikes! Very unprofessional. The outline for their scoring is less than clear. I feel bad for those involved.

Just wondering what everyone else is thinking. I think it's a step backward for MWC and with it being held in Vancouver I can forsee that the diversity of contestants from across the country will be limited. Imagine the cost of a flight from NB, NS, PEI, NL, or Quebec?!

In saying all of this I hope I am proven wrong and that the new direction for MWC is an awesome one and this is simply a case of poor presentation. Sigh, long gone are the MWC days of Jimmy Steele and the other professionals in the business :(

I am very surprized that no one has posted anything about the current Miss Newfoundland Labrador. She has been making news everywhere; locally, nationally and internationally. People of interest should check out her web page.

Katie Starke qualifies for Miss Canada competition

Dec 26, 2009 - 04:30 AM
By Jeff Hayward

UXBRIDGE -- First Canada, then the universe.

That's the goal of Goodwood's Katie Starke, former Miss Teen Canada, who recently qualified to compete for the title of Miss Universe Canada during a preliminary competition involving 46 other young women from the GTA and Central Ontario area, she said. Ms. Starke noted the top 12 women from that contest will now move on to the national competition, to be held in Toronto at the end of May.

The national showdown will highlight 50 contestants from across the country, with the winner to represent Canada at the Miss Universe competition in the summer, she added.

Ms. Starke, 19, is over six feet tall in heels and a veteran hockey player. She graduated from Uxbridge Secondary School with an academic scholarship to York University to study business and play on York's women's hockey team. She competed last year for the title of Miss Teen World and placed sixth, she said. But that experience has helped prepare her for this round.

"My year as Miss Teen Canada really gave me the chance to learn about the world of pageants," she said. "I learned how to walk, gained great public speaking skills and met a lot of great people who have been essential in sponsoring me for the preliminary competition and now for the national competition."

She said without her experience as Miss Teen Canada, "there is no way I would have had the credentials to go for the title of Miss Universe Canada."

While preparing for the cross-country contest, the women are also responsible for organizing charitable events across the GTA, explained Ms. Starke. She said one goal is to organize an online auction at the end of January, with proceeds to the SOS charity, raising orphaned and abandoned children, also helping poor families care for their young ones. In the meantime, Ms. Starke is seeking items for the auction, as well as seeking sponsors to cover travel costs, coaching fees and wardrobe. To contact her, e-mail kstarke@yorku.ca.

Miss Universe Canada Mariana Valente poses for a photo at Jeanne Lottie Boutique in Yorkville yesterday, preparing for tomorrow's charity bash at the Berkeley Church on Queen St. E. (ERNEST DOROSZUK/Sun Media)

Last time I saw Mariana Valente she wore a green bikini and four-inch heels.
Funny how you remember certain things, eh? The bikini was between lime and pea.
Ms Valente was waltzing across a stage at the John Bassett Theatre on her way to the Miss Universe Canada title last May. I was a judge.
We chose well, it turns out.
Our little miss is an angel of mercy for the kids of Brazil.
Which brings me, oddly enough, to a boutique on the eastern fringe of Yorkville.
Pink is very hot at Jeanne Lottie on Scollard St. The walls are pink, the pillows, the mousepads. Even the toilet paper is pink.
"Pink is the new red," someone tells me.
Many of the purses on display are pink.
Valente, 24, is here to choose one for the auction at her fundraiser tomorrow night. She helped the store with its breast cancer campaign, so a favour for a favour.
"What do you think?" she asks me, holding up a sizzling pink handbag.
She'd look good clutching a plastic bag. That figure is made for Copacabana. You could sink a rainforest in those big, brown eyes.

CALLING CARD
But I hate pink. She picks an orange one.
Tomorrow's gala is the reason Mariana Valente became a beauty queen. Miss Universe Canada is a good calling card if you run a charity.
Mariana's charity is the children of her native Brazil.
It started with her grandmother, who for years held a Christmas party for the poor in Caxambu, 300 km north of Rio. She died two years ago.
Mariana and her family kept the party going, long distance. They came to Canada in 1997.
And they set their sights higher -- rebuilding a ramshackle shelter for abused kids in Caxambu.
Headquarters for the charity, now called BASE, is the dinner table in Richmond Hill. There's Mariana, her dad Gustavo, an engineer at Bombardier, her schoolteacher mom, Ellen, sister Patricia, 26, and brother Luis Gustavo, 28.

SCHOOL NEXT
"Winning the pageant," says Mariana, "meant we could help on a much bigger scale.
"What a great way to honour my grandmother."
The shelter is nearly done. Mariana, whose beau is a construction worker, goes to Brazil next month to scout the next plan: A school to teach adults basic job skills.
Much more than a pretty face is our Mariana.
She's had an action-packed six months since I last saw her. She didn't make the final 15 at Miss Universe in the Bahamas. But her roomate was Miss Bolivia, so she got caught up in the pageant's big international incident.
A sort of Misses Crisis, it centred on the national-dress event.
Miss Peru wore a diablada (dance of the devils) costume. Vivid colours, with a horned hat.
Neighbouring Bolivia, which claims diablada as its own, went ballistic. The minister of culture threatened to go to the International Court of Justice. An "unlawful appropriation of Bolivian heritage," he called it. I kid you not.
Bull-ivia! said Peru. Diablada knows no borders.
And you thought beauty contestants were catty.
"The two girls got along just fine," says Mariana, "but it got political."
So much for the eternal theme of pageants: World peace.
No dispute over Miss Canada's costume -- a sexy amethyst-themed outfit, for one of our national gems.
At Jeanne Lottie she's dressed down, if that's possible. Jeans and a dark turquoise top.
Lovely. Where'd you get it?
"Guess."
Well, I haven't a clue, really.
"No, no, Guess."
Right. She's just in from her part-time job at a Richmond Hill daycare. She's taking a year off York University to deal with the demands of her title -- charity events include Sick Kids, AIDS and breast cancer. A TV gig, surprise, surprise, might be in her future.
For now, she scrambles to get ready for tomorrow's shindig at the Berkeley Church on Queen St. E. (To attend or donate, see baseforchildren.com.) Dinner, dance, auction, and Cirque du Soleil performers.
She'll wear a gold, silver and black cocktail dress.
Sorry. No green bikini.

Miss Universe Canada, Mariana Valente, is the second York student in four years to represent Canada at the Miss Universe pageant.

The carpeted room muffled the sound of Mariana Valente's three-inch heels as she rounded the corner and entered the room. In her heels, her five-foot-ten frame was taller than mine.

The statuesque Valente was dressed in fitted black casual pants with a sleeveless ruffled top. Her long, wavy brown hair rested on her shoulders, just past her oversized golden hoop earrings. She sat upright in the seat across from me, seemingly unaware of the lights and cameras clicking away as she spoke.
Casual isn't quite the same when you're Miss Universe Canada. Of course, Valente's life no longer quite resembles what it was a few months ago, before she won the title that made her Canada's newest ambassador.
The 23-year-old York student who lives in Richmond Hill had to put her French studies on hold this year in order to acquire the newest addition to her wardrobe – a diamond studded crown – and fulfill the responsibilities it entails. As she pointed out, competing in the Miss Universe competition is the pinnacle of her pageant career.
"Yes, I'm retired," she conceded with a smile. It's easy to hear a natural, but polite, sort of confidence in her voice. Despite her poise, Valente admitted that the images of the American contestants in both the 2007 and the 2008 Miss Universe pageants falling over onstage did nothing to calm her nerves. "[Onstage] you do block out all of the noises but at the same time, you can still hear your family screaming at the back," she said.
Though Valente failed to crack the top 15 in the Miss Universe competition, held on Aug. 23 in the Bahamas, it doesn't mean she didn't accomplish what she set out to do when she entered the beauty-obsessed world of pageants.
"I always had a purpose," she said, describing the charity she started in 2004 to help underprivileged children in the village of Caxambu, Brazil – the village in which her mother and grandmother grew up and the country in which she was born.
The Brazilian Association for Social and Educational Support (BASE) has been aided tremendously by the publicity that comes with the pageant circuit, and ever since Valente took home the Miss Latina Canada crown in 2007, the charity has continued to grow.
Born in São Paulo, Brazil, the striking Valente has split her time equally between her native country and her adopted country. She has a positive outlook on the Canadian experience and said she was proud to share her hybrid identity with other pageant contestants in the Bahamas.
"To see a Brazilian girl representing –" she paused to correct herself, "a Brazilian and Canadian girl representing Canada, they really got to see that Canada is very multicultural," she said.
Valente spent the three weeks prior to the competition preparing for the pageant, and, although the experience of being surrounded by 84 of the most beautiful women from around the world sounds overwhelming for the average person, Valente said the diversity of the group made her feel strangely comfortable with the other women. It's a reality she's familiar with; in fact, it's one she said she sees every day at York.
"I think that I am most proud of – because I can relate to it – the diversity here [at York] and how everyone is so welcoming," explained Valente.
York is no stranger to pageant winners. In 2006, York's Alice Panikian faced the challenge of competing on the Miss Universe stage fresh after Canadian Natalie Glebova claimed the Miss Universe title the previous year. Panikian didn't win, but she did make the finals.
In the annual Miss Universe pageant, owned in part by famous business tycoon Donald Trump, contestants are judged on three separate categories: bathing suit, evening gown and final interview. Valente said it's often difficult to know exactly what finer details the judges are looking for from pageant to pageant.
The bathing suit category is one Valente counts as one of her strengths, so it's not surprising that her workout regiment leading up to the Miss Universe competition was nothing short of fierce. Preparing for the physical aspect of the Miss Universe competition is a variable she can control. The final interview, though, is something Valente said should come more naturally.
She notes that some girls study and practise answering potential questions and answers, but she takes a different approach.
"I don't think you can prepare for the [final interview]," she said. "I don't like rehearsing. You don't sound natural."
If the challenge and the pressure prior to competition was an uphill climb, Valente faces a mountain of expectations in the coming months. "If we are going to grow [BASE], this is the year to do it," she said, adding that pageants are not treated the same in Canada as they are in other parts of the world, and that they are not as popular. This makes Valente's challenge of bringing publicity, not to mention donations and awareness, to her charity's cause all the more urgent. She wants to get the word out before the shine from her Miss
Universe Canada win begins to fade.
With all of the new commitments that come with her crown – speaking at elementary schools, doing interviews and building her charity – it's difficult for her to see her friends as often as she used to. But, she made it clear that her newly acquired title hasn't changed the relationship she has with her friends.
"I am the same person, I just accomplished something different. I miss being here, I miss being with my friends," she said, peering out of the window into the bustling Harry
W. Arthurs Common.
Valente said the Miss Universe Canada experience has made her rethink her career goals. Though she maintained that her goal of becoming an elementary school teacher may still be in the cards, having the chance to interview Miss Universe 2008, Venezuela's Dayana Mendoza, during a segment for eTalk Daily made her consider other career possibilities,
perhaps one in journalism.
"Maybe next time I can interview you," she joked. Just as she finished her final point, she got distracted by the vibrating cell phone sitting next to her.
She read the text message aloud: "School is not the same without you."
Next September, Valente can continue learning from the teachers she raves about, but, until then, Valente intends on continuing to make Canada proud.

- BASE will be holding a dinner and dance fundraiser on Oct. 23 at the Berkley Church in Toronto.

August 29, 2009 – 27 year old Montrealer, Yajaira Mercedes of the Dominican Republic won the title of Miss Latina Canada 2010 at the only national event in the country for the Hispanic community in Canada. This is the first time both Quebec and the Dominican Republic community has been honored with this national title.

“I just can’t believe it,” says Mercedes, who is fluent in French, Spanish and English. “I feel like all of my dreams have come true. I don’t believe that any of this is happening, I feel like I’m going to wake up because I’m in a dream! I am the first winner from Quebec, the first from the Dominican, and the first black woman to ever hold this title. I just can't beleive it!”

She is definitely not dreaming. Coming in first runner up at the Miss Latina Canada, Quebec regional competition, Yajaira placed as first runner, and was pleasantly surprised that her position awarded her the opportunity to represent “la belle province”, along with winner Judith Martinez. Out of 30 women from across Canada, Yajaira’s grace, poise, and articulation made her a favorite amongst the judges.

Born in San Victor, Dominican Republic Yajaira Mercedes is an esthetician and cosmetician that has been dreaming of breaking into the world of modeling and fashion. Mercedes is a Canadian citizen and permanent resident of Montreal.

With a busy year ahead of her, she will be in Miami, Florida in both October and December to participate in Miss Latina International Supermodel, as well as a special guest for the Parade of Costumes. Mercedes will also visit Hollywood, California to study Acting for Film at the New York Film Academy at Universal Studios. Among the many guest appearances across Canada that she will make, Yajaira will be a special guest at the Toronto Pride Parade, Caribana Festival, and both the Puerto Rican and Dominican Day Parade’s in New York city.

In 2008, Miss Latina Canada became the first reality television series to air in the country about pageants, and also the first time in over 22 years that a pageant was broadcast on national Canadian television in a prime time slot.

Visit www.nfpageants.net to check it out, and while there, be sure to take a look at our 'video archive' - watch footage and highlights from previous years of our event: one of the largest teen pageantry events in Canada!

Good luck as well to Siera Bearchell - Miss Teen Canada-World 2009 of Saskatchewan, as she represents our country at the Miss Teen World Pageant in Houston, Texas. Bring home the crown, love!

P.S. Does anyone else think that Natalie Glebova-Alice Panikian was a MUCH better one-two punch than Dayana Mendoza-Stefania Fernandes? I think us Canadians should have been the ones to lay claim to the Miss Universe repeat wins! Thoughts? :)

You can see photos of the show. Faze Magazine is one of our media sponsors and they did a spot light on the pageant on their site. We were also featured in a full page ad prior to the pageant and we will also have a full editorial in there next issue. There are a Teen Mag.
Some great shots. Love Faze there are so nice! They held a party for the girls - it was great here is a video

Singer shiloh was there too, no comments on how awful I look - it was pooring down rain and the road was torn up so we could not stop in front of the venue. I had to make sure the girls looked great and did not get wet lol. I was soaked... hence the hair.

In the spirit of Mariana's new pics, I'd like to wish you all Happy Karen Baldwin Day!

On July 26, 1982, Karen Baldwin from London, Ontario was crowned Miss Universe in Lima, Peru.

I joke with a few pageant friends that it's time to light a candle in honour of this huge day. ;-)

(And I'm a few hours late for NF, Atlantic and Eastern time, with my apologies.)

Hi everyone,

I do not want to keep posting the many articles etc going out on all the girls and the pageant. But I wanted to let you know we have been featured in media, print and radio for the past 6 months across Canada. The standard articles about the girls. Some are posted on the website under media but also on the Facebook group. Some I have not found but the girls have sent me. There really has been a surplus of media attention. Recently, what I have seen is PEI has been outstanding she was on every radio station on tv and had a couple of articles, one of the Quebec girls was on the radio yesterday. Eastern Ont was on CTV, Alberta, we have had many girls on Shaw and City TV. BC as well. The girls have done an amazing job at promoting their platforms and raising money for FTC.
I am thrilled at the positive response (so far) we have had to the pageant.
Now, During pageant week we will be posting updates, uploading photos, and having prize give aways - Kind of like the be the first caller and you get.... If you want to stay up to date on where the girls are, what TV show they will appear at etc the join our fan page. It is listed under
Miss Teen Canada-World pageant.
That way you will get up to date info on whats happening.

Voting has started BTW - we have opted for the 1 vote per person or per email method. We wanted the person who really got all the most "people" to vote to be the winner.

As you may know, we have taken a interactive approach and had each girl create a blog - The link is on their profile.
They get blog assignments and have been documenting their experience as a title holder - they are also judged on it. Our social media director has been outstanding and creative in creating these assignments. One thing in Canada I feel is lacking is public awareness and appreciation for a pageant ( and title holder) The only way to break down that stereotype and show people a pageant can open doors, create leaders, and be a positive experience is showing them. Not just telling them. It is not just in the show we produce but instead the entire journey leading up to the event. That is where the lessons are learnt, the confidence is gained, and they prove to them self they can do what ever they put their mind too. They have already accomplished something, because they are standing on that stage.

The girls have done a great job, some have even got letters from their Mayor wishing them good luck etc. These kids, held festivals, ( meaning they got local talent to perform and had a big show in support of them) created a dance camp where they taught lessons and the money raised went to FTC, sold muffins, sold their own art work for FTC. The creativity to raise funds for the charity was amazing. They also attended events, parades, spoke at schools etc. You can see a lot of this stuff on their blogs.

I can tell you, that we have a FIERCE competition ahead of us, it really is any ones title to take.

Anyhow, we will not be posting anymore on this board as I do not want to annoy people with post after post etc. If you are interested in following our girls Journey to become Miss Teen Canada-World 2009 Join our fan page on facebook.
Hope to see you all at the show!

All the best

Degrassi: the Next Generation's Paula Brancati and Adamo Ruggeiro to Host The Search for Miss Teen Canada-World Event on July 25, 2009 at The John Bassett Theatre at 8 p.m.

Canadian Singers Divine Brown and Gary Beals to perform

Toronto, ON: Michelle Weswaldi, Executive Director of Miss Teen Canada-World, today announced the line-up of talent and hosts for the show for Miss Teen Canada-World on July 25 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, John Bassett Theatre at 8:00 p.m.

Paula Brancati, has been on three seasons of Degrassi: The Next Generation, and can be currently seen as a recurring character on CBC Television’s popular series Being Erica. Paula’s passion for the arts also extends to music, in which she is classically trained in both voice and piano. She was recently nominated for two 2009 Dora Awards in the category of Outstanding Female in a Musical and Outstanding Performance in a Featured Role. Paula’s past television credits include a leading role on the CBC series The Blobheads, guest appearances on Life With Derek, Heartland, among others. In 2006, Paula was nominated for a Gemini Award for Best Performance in a Children’s Youth Program or Series for Dark Oracle (YTV).

Adamo Ruggiero is an experienced television host, having hosted/co-hosted such shows as the MTV Hills After Show, Video on Trail, Canada’s Next Top Model, the 22nd and 23rd annual Gemini Awards as well as hosted multiple stories on CTV’s E-Talk. Adamo most recently hosted the first season of YTV’s hit series The Next Star, where he led the national search for Canada ’s next, young singing sensation. In 2002, Adamo began working on the second season of Degrassi: The Next Generation as Marco Del Rossi. Throughout seven years on the show, his role as a gay teenager has garnered much attention. In an attempt to share his story with other struggling gay youth, he has lent his name to The Trevor Project where he shot an international PSA alongside Roseanne Barr, T.R. Knight, Kristin Davis, John Goodman and Neil Patrick Harris. In April 2008, Degrassi was nominated for its second GLAAD Media Award where Adamo was invited to present at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood alongside Ellen DeGeneres, Rufus Wainwright, Sharon Stone and Tom Ford. He is currently, a student at York University in Communications Studies and Film Theory

For years, musical powerhouse, Divine Brown has been quietly carving out her own history on the Canadian R&B and soul circuit. In 2005 she released her much anticipated debut album, “Old School Love” which cemented Divine’s reputation as one of the country’s strongest urban talents. In 2008, she released “The Love Chronicles” which spans everything from bop-shoo-bop to sassy surf’n’soul kiss-offs to sultry late-night neo-soul. She has won a Juno Award for Best R&B/Soul Recording of the Year.

Recording Artist Gary Beals is a Juno Award nominee and a five-time African Nova Scotian Music Award winner, Canadian Independent Music Award and East Coast Music Award winner, a Canadian Urban Music Award nominee, Canadian Radio Music Award nominee and a Planet Africa Rising Star recipient. His hit single “Summer Nights”, had steady rotation on radio stations across Canada , and the video to the single helped propel Gary ’s Top 10 Album. The album received a 2005 Juno nomination for R&B Soul Recording of the year and a 2004 Canadian Urban Music Award nomination for New Artist of the Year. Through Gary ’s success on Canadian Idol, he acquired a record deal with Plasma Records and Kindling Music, owned by judges Farley Flex and Jake Gold. His latest album, The Rebirth Of… was released on June 9, 2009.

The Miss Teen Canada-World (MTC-W) Competition is the only national search that conducts provincial competitions across the country to select 54 finalists for 2009. The staged show produced in each province is to showcase the girls’ talents and the overall winner becomes “Miss Teen” of their home province. The remaining finalists are awarded city titles and invited to travel to Toronto with nine other provincial winners to compete for the title of Miss Teen Canada-World on July 25, 2009.

MTC-W is the only competition that has the rights to send the winner to the International Miss Teen World Competition. Organizers have searched the country for the best of the best. These Canadian teenage finalists are those who will compete for the title of Miss Teen Canada-World to represent Canada . Miss Teen Canada-World 2009 will go on to represent the country and compete in Houston , Texas , for the coveted Miss Teen-World title in August 2009. This final Canadian competition will be held in downtown Toronto on Saturday, July 25, 2009, at 8:00 p.m. at the John Bassett Theatre at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Girls aged 13 - 19 from across Canada will compete for the coveted title and the largest prize package awarded in a Canadian teen competition. Over $25,000 in cash, prizes, and scholarships will be awarded to talented aspiring teens. During their time in Toronto from July 19 to 25, the semi finalists will be seeing all the local attractions and experiencing Toronto ’s hospitality with their Moms and families.

“We thought that since the winner will be volunteering in Kenya in 2010 on a Me to We trip, it should be a requirement for the MTC-W Competition for each national delegate to raise $400 within their communities towards Me to We’s charity partner Free The Children.” Says Weswaldi. The winner will be invited to participate as a volunteer on a Me to We trip. This experience is to gain first-hand interaction by visiting a Free The Children project overseas. Their commitment to youth is to engage them in global development and social issues education so that they take action to make a difference.

Miss Teen Canada-World provides the winner with the opportunity to be an ambassador for Canada with the mandate to empower youth to take a leadership role in their communities. The girls have already learned first-hand about becoming a positive role model, and contribute to projects in their community by raising funds for Free The Children. By July 6, the girls collectively had surpassed the goal of $20,000 and have today raised over $30,000 for Free The Children. The girls will also

be judged on academic achievement, presentation and self-confidence and community contributions, all of the qualities that enables a young woman to become a leader of tomorrow.

Marc Kielburger, Co-founder, Free The Children to accept $30,000 cheque from contestants of The Search for Miss Teen Canada-World on July 25, 2009

Girls surpass previous goal of $20,000 weeks before deadline

Toronto, ON: Michelle Weswaldi, Executive Director of Miss Teen Canada-World, today announced that on July 25 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, John Bassett Theatre, Marc Kielburger , co-founder, Free The Children, will accept a cheque for $30,000 from 54 outstanding Canadian teen girls. Each girl surpassed the requirement of raising at least $400 in her community across Canada and by July 1, over $10,000 more had been raised than previously expected.

Their commitment to youth is to engage them in global development and social issues education so that they take action to make a difference.

Me to We supports Free The Children’s international development work overseas. Me to We Trips offer unforgettable volunteer adventure experiences for young people. Youth do incredible things, like build schools and assist on clean water projects.

Me to We Trips offer international volunteer and leadership experiences in the rural communities of Arizona , Kenya , Ecuador , China and India . Participants build leadership skills and cultivate new friendships as they discover an incredible new culture. They return with new perspectives and more energy than ever before to get their family and friends involved in raising awareness and funds for overseas development projects through Free The Children, their charity partner.

Free The Children’s domestic programs provide North American youth with the confidence and leadership skills they need to take action on social issues in their communities and overseas. Their motto for these programs is to “educate, engage and empower,” a three step process that helps young people develop into socially-conscious global citizens.

Miss Teen Canada-World provides the winner with the opportunity to be an ambassador for Canada with the mandate to empower youth to take a leadership role in their communities and to create world-changing actions through Free The Children. The girls have already learned first-hand about becoming a positive role model, and contribute to projects in their community. The call is out to find Canada’s best overall teens for the 2nd annual Top Teen of Canada competition! Teenagers from across the country will be chosen to represent their communities in a competition that will award $5,000 in cash scholarship prizes.

This August, the chosen delegates will travel to Vancouver, BC for one week, one will be chosen as the Top Teen of Canada.

The Top Teen program raised over $20,000 for their chosen charity, Cops For Cancer for the Canadian Cancer Society. Each chosen delegate will again do a fundraiser towards this cause in his/her hometown prior to attending the final event.

During the week, they will receive professional training in various genres to enhance their life skills including public speaking, speech presentation, interview skills, and attend workshops such as self-defense, stress management, and health & fitness. A judging panel will determine the winner based on a speech presentation, interview, and a personal talent showcase. Last year’s contestants received nation-wide media coverage and were viewed as role models for other youth.

“Teenagers can make an incredible difference in their community and have great potential for leadership.” says creator Darren Storsley, a high school teacher and winner of the 2004 Canadian Male Model Search. “This program will allow youth to exceed and for the overall winner, a year of public appearances representing Canadian youth.”

The Top Teen of Canada Competition is open to all teenagers aged 13-18. For more information, visit: http://www.topteenofcanada.com or email info@topteenofcanada.com

Former British Columbia beauty queen sues top agency, alleges sexual battery

By Anthony Mccartney, The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - A former British Columbia beauty queen has sued International Creative Management, claiming the firm and one of its top talent agents subjected her to unwanted sexual advances.

The lawsuit filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court on behalf of Claire Robinson alleges ICM and agent Jack Gilardi exploited the former Miss British Columbia and that she was sent to auditions for roles that didn't exist or weren't available to her. She alleges that one of Gilardi's friends, John Rockwell, introduced her to the agent and in 2008 threatened and raped her.

The talent agency denies Robinson's allegations. A phone message left Tuesday for Rockwell, who isn't affiliated with ICM, wasn't returned.

"ICM denies any and all wrongdoing," said Michelle Suess, an agency spokeswoman. "Ms. Robinson's allegations are completely baseless and ICM will vigorously defend this action."

The class-action lawsuit also seeks to end a practice it calls "hip pocketing," in which an agent claims they will represent a person but never actually takes them as a client. The lawsuit claims the practice at ICM led to the sexual exploitation of Robinson and others who were sent on fake auditions.

Robinson's suit also claims that Gilardi inappropriately touched her while en route in an ICM limousine to a stuntmen awards show in 2007.

The lawsuit seeks millions in damages and a judge's order to end "hip pocketing" at ICM, which the suit claims has been going on for years.

While it is the practice of many media outlets not to publish the names of alleged sexual assault victims, Robinson's lawyer says his client has made a conscious decision to identify herself.

Lawyer Perry Wander told The Canadian Press in a telephone interview from Beverly Hills, Calif., that Robinson wants to help protect other women who may come to Hollywood.

Wander says Robinson currently lives in Vancouver, has "pretty much abandoned" her modelling career, and is set to enrol at university in the fall.

ICM represents some of the entertainment industry's biggest names, including Chris Rock and Beyonce Knowles. Gilardi, who was married to actress Annette Funicello, has represented actors such as James Caan, Charlton Heston and Burt Reynolds.

Attorneys for Robinson, 23, say they're hoping to find women who may have received similar treatment within the past four years. Robinson's suit claims her career was irreparably damaged by ICM and Rockwell's alleged actions and that she suffered a nervous breakdown as a result.

Besides fraud, negligent supervision and a sexual battery claim against Rockwell, the suit seeks civil damages against ICM under a legal procedure often reserved for the mob or gangs.

The suit wants to designate the talent agency under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act, also known as RICO. If a judge allows that claim, Robinson's attorneys, Wander and Mitch Kalcheim, say they intend to seek triple the amount of Robinson's actual damages. They're also seeking 10 per cent of ICM's gross earnings for one year as punitive damages if Robinson's lawsuit succeeds.

Subject: Who are you calling a bimbo?

Author:
AmeriCan Fan
[Edit]

Date Posted: 09:10:29 05/15/09 Fri

By MIKE STROBEL - Toronto Sun

"Bimbos" are really taking it on their dimpled chins this week.
The latest blow comes from Britain, where else?
Yes, the land that gave us Spice Girls, Benny Hill and Samantha Fox, who insured her bosom for a quarter-million pounds and once remarked, "I've got 10 pairs of training shoes -- one for every day of the week."
Now, this headline is turning heads in London's Daily Telegraph: Intelligent Women Enjoy Sex More Than Bimbos, Research Shows.
It refers to a King's College study of 2,000 female twins, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
"These findings show that emotional intelligence is an advantage in many aspects of your life, including the bedroom," says Prof. Tim Spector.
In other words, bimbos are a bust, eh, professor?
Yes indeed, he says, the research shows they are more likely to suffer from female orgasmic disorder.
ORGASMIC DISORDER
Come again? Female orgasmic disorder. They can't ... You know. Up to 30% of women have it.
(Funny, I bet another study would show up to 30% of women have inept lovers?)
Anyway, Charles Adler wants to talk about it on AM640.
So, naturally, he calls me. Good choice, Charles. I am known as something of an expert in matters of the heart. In fact, around the newsroom they call me The Professor.
So, I speak with authority when I tell Mr. Adler's listeners it's not fair to pick on "bimbos".
In my experience, a woman who looks bimbo-esque is just as likely to have a working brain as a woman in beige smock and sensible shoes.
Since when are beauty and brains mutually exclusive?

A crowning example this week: The Miss Universe Canada pageant. It's here in the Big Smoke, and for the third year I'm a judge.
Already, the cynics among you are tittering, "Yeah, sure. Bimbo Of The Year."
Think again, you in those sensible shoes.
Here is but a sampling from the resumes of the 57 contestants.

Marketing director, University of Lethbridge, University of Montreal, trauma unit nurse, U of T law, Ottawa U law, dressage equestrian, three languages, McGill, Gamma Phi Beta, Concordia grad, Masters of Science in Nursing student, handbag designer, government chemist, U of Calgary, restaurant manager, neurosciences major, four languages, realtor, molecular biology major, International Study Centre at Herstmonceux Castle in England, public health nurse, astrophysics major, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, six languages ...

Celina Toenz, 18, of Bolton, is a frosh at Western and a black belt in karate. Call her a bimbo and she will break your nose.

Sameet Gill, 21, is in fourth-year chemistry at University of Alberta, speaks three languages and is on the dean's honour roll.

Tara Mobayen, 21, was a gold-medal mathematician back in Iran and now double-majors in biology and astrophysics at U of T.

One lovely miss reports a "photogenic memory" but I think that's just a slip. Or perhaps even her memory is good-looking.
Another says her horse has been the biggest influence in her life other than her parents. You snigger. But I think it's sweet.
Pretty girl loves her horse. Doesn't make her a bimbo.
And why do we assume a pillowy chest means a feathery head?
"It's not fair," says Robin H-C, my life coach. "There's always some basis for a stereotype, but you can't say it's true across the board. Absolutely not.
"We tend to separate beauty and brains and we don't generally anticipate finding both in the same package."
Well, 57 such packages are strutting about the John Bassett Theatre stage this week, chasing the Miss Universe Canada crown.

The finale goes tomorrow. Not Sunday as I doltishly reported in yesterday's column.

Omigod, I'm such a bimbo.

This year seems to be quite interesting in terms of competition. Lots of diversity, and not too many Eastern Europeans from Toronto. I think that there are tons of girls that stand out, but only one of them will win the title. Who??? Well, I've narrowed my choices to a top 10.

The Top 5:
PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

My honest opinion, Celina is the perfect choice this year. She stands out in so many ways. Height, beauty, style, intelligence. Chanel is pretty and seeing how the prelims went, it wouldn't be a surprise if she make the top 5. I love Mariana. She's stunning. I would be very happy if Adwoa was chosen the winner, because she represents the diversity of Canada. Finally, Ylenia, who is also a stunning beauty, I can't see the top 5 without her in it.

The Top 10:
PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

Ksenia is absolutely gorgeous, but I'm not completely sold. Kaley is very "Top Model". I think TingJia could totally sneak into the 5, but for now she's in my 10. Something about Sandra intrigues me, and I think Brooke is very urban....

Overall, the girls were pretty strong this year. I can't wait to see who wins tonight! But I have to say that Celina is MY GIRL!!!!

Good Luck!

Lovely Mariana Valente won Miss Universe Canada tonight. She's a former Miss Latina Canada.

Ylenia Aurucci (of Canada's Next Top Model cycle one) was first runner-up.

Further details when I find them out. I'm sure some of our regular posters attended the show. Thank you to my mole who texted me the above two names.

Let's try to keep our 2009 relatively bashing-free, ja? Good night.
