A West Vancouver woman is hoping to wear the title of Miss World Canada when the pageant comes to town next week.
Sherry Shahrzad Jobani, 19, will join 32 other contestants May 7 on stage at the Chandos Pattison Theatre in Surrey for the official preliminary to the international competition.
Contestants will be judged on their initiatives to promote the pageant and fundraise for its chosen charity, Variety the Children's Charity. They'll also receive points for competing in three optional categories: talent, bathing suit and international costume. Forty per cent of the score will come from a series of pre-competition interviews with judges. Final marks will be awarded for a walk onstage in evening wear.
Jobani, who attended Chartwell and Sentinel schools and is in her second year of sciences at UBC, says she entered the competition because she likes fundraising and loves the idea of helping others. "Having that title will really give me a platform for my voice to be heard," she said.
The pageant's winner will represent Canada in the Miss World finals in Vietnam next November.
Jobani will host a final fundraiser this evening, April 30, at Mona's Lebanese Cuisine, 1328 Hornby St. in Vancouver. Admission, $40, includes a three-course meal and live entertainment. Ten dollars from each meal will be donated to Variety.
