A popular annual spring event, the Miss North Ontario Regional Canada Pageant, is set to take place in Sudbury this week.

Supporters and the public are invited to come out to see 33 pageant delegates compete for the honour of representing Northern Ontario.

The pageant has been a part of spring rites for young ladies from 16 to 24 for more than 35 years. The event is an official preliminary to Miss World Canada, Miss Teen Canada World And Top Teen Of Canada.

he Miss North Ontario Regional Canada Pageant is also an official supporter of Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer.
Kristen Ethier, 20, a third-year biomedical-biology student at Laurentian University, will represent Naughton. Ethier plans to apply to the Northern Ontario Medical School this fall.

"Ever since I've been in high school, I've always been interested in science," she says. "As I got older, I knew I wanted to go into the medical field. That's what our program is tailored to."

Ethier says she's looking forward to the pageant. "I was invited by the president," she says. "A friend actually knew about this. She had done pageants before. She told me it would be a really great experience ...

"I think for any girl it's probably a lot of fun to get dressed up. I've never been in anything like this before. I thought, 'hey, why not?'"

The talent portion of the pageant takes place Friday. Ethier, who has had some vocal training, plans to sing Strawberry wine.

Contestant speeches, meanwhile, will not take place in front of an audience, but rather the judges.

"We have to choose an important topic that resonates with us. For me, that's drinking and driving. Not because I've had anyone close to me a victim of it, it's something I'm very strongly against. I wish more people would take it seriously."

Cheryl Kozera, the owner and organizer of the Miss North Ontario Regional Canada Pageant, says the event is a great way to promote not only the individual, but the North as well.

"This event focuses on the importance of promoting tourism in the North and the discovery of the rewards of volunteer work for worthwhile charities," Kozera said. "The most important focus is self-development of personal character, confidence, stage presence and personal interaction with others.

"The candidates also must focus on a supporting an agency or charity for the betterment of the community or area they serve. Our host chari

ty is the Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer. We focus on their work helping provide support, advocacy and education."

Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer is an independent registered charity. Incorporated in December 1998, it is a recognized provider of services that helps Northern families cope with the experience of childhood cancer.

For past president Lorraine Chartier, the long and difficult journey of childhood cancer began in 1991 when her youngest daughter, Barbie, was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma.

Life took a sharp turn at the Chartier home, with Lorraine attending to Barbie's medical needs, while dad's role was divided between pursuing his education, working, maintaining the well-being of the entire family and numerous trips to Toronto. As the same time, their daughter, Michelle, stayed home and took cared for her two brothers.

During that period, most of Lorraine's and Barbie's time was spent in Toronto either at the Ronald Macdonald House, or in the hospital during Barbie's numerous surgeries and ongoing chemotherapy treatment.

After Barbie lost her battle to cancer in 1996, Lorraine worked to bring back the Rainbow CanCare support group in Sudbury.

With the help of oldest daughter Michelle and other bereaved parents, they founded the Northern Ontario Families of Children in the fall of 1998.

In 2000, Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer began fundraising to provide financial assistance to families, as well as emotional support and expanded their support from the Sudbury region to assisting families throughout Northern Ontario.
