all foetuses are female. if they have the xx chromosomes they stay female. If they have the xy chromosomes they turn male.

The process of turning male is understood to a degree. It happens in surges of chemistry in the womb. Gay would be someone who hasn't had the full hetero set of chemistry. I remember when this first got published not that I paid much attention at the time. What I remember were the arguments because some people thought that meant that the mother was being blamed for turning her child gay in the womb but that's an inaccurate inference - the process is already set down in the genetics.
