Abby - good info and thanks for posting it. Another thing about Social Security that some older women (and men) do not know about is that if you are over 60 and were married for at least 10 years, and you are not remarried, you are eligible for a "widow's benefit" if your former spouse should die before you. What that means, is that if your former spouse dies before you, you can then collect the same amount as their FULL benefit; often double the amount one might have been receiving. A divorced spouse (men too) in this situation is treated like a widow or widower. For many this is important, because for women who stayed home, and/or had lower earnings than their former spouse, this can give you a boost later in life.

This applies for men too, it's just that most of them have made more over their lifetimes, so any benefit they would be eligible for, if their former wives pre-decease them is usually negligible, i.e. their own benefit is still usually higher than what they would get as a "widower", but their are exceptions, of course.
