Just a quicky today. Ummm....that came out wrong. Just a short quote.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The following quote is taken from 'The Fiery Cross,' by Diana Gabaldon, chapter 40, "Dundan's Secret." Copyright 2001, by Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.
"Damn," I said, resting my forehead briefly in the folds of his shirt ruffle, and inhaling the scents of starch and man with longing. "You know, if your aunt and Duncan DON't need the bed, perhaps..."
"Oh, so ye WERE wondering."
"No, I wasn't," I said. "Besides, what business is it of yours?"
"Oh, none at all," he said, unperturbed. "Only I've been asked by four men this morning if I think they will ---or have done already. Which is rather a compliment to my aunt, no?"
It was true; Jocasta MacKenzie must be well into her sixties, and yet the thought of her sharing a man's bed was by no means unthinkable. I had met any number of women who had gratefully abandoned all notion of sex, directly the cessation of childbearing made it possible ----- Jocasta wasn't one of them. At the same time ---
[> I think historically sex was a woman's duty as was reproduction. Education for everyone on the matter was lacking, thank the puritans for that. Spread your legs and think of England. Jamie himself was told women don't enjoy it so get it over with. Frankly, if neither is expected to put much effort into pleasing the other you might as well skip it. -- kgp, Tue, February 21 2023, 12:28:19
[> [> I wonder if sex within marriage was duty. Certainly not full of the passion and delight of shared intimacies, in most cases. 'Leery is more the norm, Claire is the exception. Lovers, if one was fortunate to have one, filled the need for sexual passion. Marriage wasn't about love. It was about business. I wouldn't have fared well if forced to procreate with some wretched a**. I'm not sure when social mores began to shift, maybe in the '60's? Thank God. I can't imagine living happily married, but devoid of the passion of desired touch. I don't mean sex, either. Sex is great, but the desire to be close, feel safe, yearn for the intimacy of touch... I think sex is a byproduct of intimacy, and not necessarily required. But I'm not complaining. Monkey bars be dammed. -- Betsy BFS, Tue, February 21 2023, 20:43:53
